Czyżyczka Hill: Views and Remembrance

Soldiers’ Cemetery No. 336 is located at the summit of Czyżyczka, a 364-metre-high hill in Gierczyce. The southern view stretches across the Pogórza Wielickie and Wiśnickie, with the Beskids rising in the distance. This places the two named foothill regions and the Beskids visible farther away in a clear direction. Here, the viewpoint and the memorial site are part of the same distinctive landscape.

Soldiers from the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies who fell in 1914 during the Limanowa–Łapanów operation are buried in the cemetery. The site was laid out in 1915–1916 to a design by Franz Stark. The chronology is therefore clear: those buried here fell in 1914, and the cemetery was created over the following two years. The soldiers’ cemetery in Gierczyce, Bochnia Municipality, is listed under registration number A-100/M, dated 28 June 2007.

Directions to the Cemetery

A signpost from 2017 describes the route as follows: between the buildings, turn onto a path in the direction of the water reservoir; the cemetery is about 200 metres from the Gierczyce–Nieprześnia road. Use these details as a guide and check whether the path is accessible before your visit.

The History of the Parish

The Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows is located at Gierczyce 10, 32-744 Gierczyce. Its temporary chapel was created by converting a manor house dating from around 1880, which Czesław Gajek purchased in 1972. The church interior contains 19th-century paintings transferred from the chapel previously in use.

This history leads from an older manor house to a temporary sacred space, while also linking the church interior with the paintings transferred from the chapel previously in use. Alongside the memorial site on Czyżyczka, this offers another perspective on Gierczyce: the local history of a building, its religious use and the images transferred there.

A Regional Connection to Fruit

A regional account from 2012 lists Gierczyce as one of seven sołectwa (village administrative units) in Bochnia Municipality included on the Małopolski Szlak Owocowy. This adds fruit as a regional theme alongside the views and local history.

Considering Gierczyce as a Holiday Destination

Comparing the main points of interest can help you choose a destination: Czyżyczka combines panoramic views with a war cemetery, while the history of the parish offers a different way to explore local history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether you are more interested in the landscape or the religious and local history of Gierczyce.
