Water and powerboating
Żnin is known as Poland’s powerboating capital. World and European championships in this sport are regularly held on Jezioro Żnińskie Małe. Jezioro Żnińskie Duże is suitable for windsurfing and sailing. This puts two different water activities in focus: championships on the smaller lake and wind or sailing sports on the larger one. Before making specific plans, check the current event dates as well as local access and usage conditions.
The Muzeum Sportów Motorowodnych in Żnin displays engines, including examples from the interwar period, as well as propellers, medals, photographs, posters and programmes from powerboating events. These relate both to Żnin and to waterways around the world. The collection thus combines technical exhibits with the history of the sport and its events.
City history and culture
Żnin’s town hall tower was built in the 15th century. It houses an exhibition on the city’s history by the Muzeum Ziemi Pałuckiej. The “Dzieje Żnina” exhibition includes a reconstructed armoury, a city councillors’ meeting room and a treasury. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check current access to the town hall tower before your visit.
The publishing industry also has a distinctive connection to Żnin: in the 1930s, Polish colour and women’s press emerged here through an initially small German printing house and, later, the nationwide publishing group run by Anna and Alfred Krzycki. The Muzeum Ziemi Pałuckiej also presents the permanent “Etnografia” exhibition. It explores everyday life in Pałuki around the turn of the 20th century. In Żnin, you can therefore encounter both the city’s history and insights into the region’s way of life at that time. The publishing history and ethnography focus on different periods.
Astrobaza Żnin is an astronomical observatory at I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Braci Śniadeckich in Żnin. A walk through the streets of the former Żnin also offers a way to explore the city’s history.
Narrow-gauge railway and travel planning
Żnin is the starting station for the tourist narrow-gauge railway. The Żnińska Kolej Wąskotorowa runs along a twelve-kilometre route from Żnin via Wenecja and Biskupin to Gąsawa. As timetables are seasonal and may change, check the current schedule before planning a trip.
If your travel group has different interests, this comparison can help you decide which activities to prioritise during your stay.
