Klonowo tells a story of village history and remembrance: a chapel and a wayside shrine are both dated to 1884. At the same time, the rural layout of the village lies within the “B” conservation protection zone. This means the focus is not only on individual historic features, but also on the village’s inherited structure. Klonowo’s railway station dates from the early 20th century; a railway worker’s house with an outbuilding is also among the village’s historic features. Several cemeteries add to this focus. In Klonowo, architectural history, village structure, and remembrance stand side by side.

Places of Remembrance and Village Culture

Klonowo is home to the Polish Army Soldiers’ Cemetery of 1939. On September 1, 2026, a commemorative event was held there to mark the 87th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War. The family of a soldier who fell in 1939 and whose remains lie in the Klonowo burial site also attended. The commemoration connects the place with a specific family history, without presupposing a general tradition of events. An Evangelical cemetery is also among Klonowo’s historic places of remembrance.

The “Klonowiaki” folk group is part of the region’s culture. A 2008 account describes it as a group that had been active in Klonowo since 1998. Through numerous performances and folk events, it showed how the inhabitants of this part of the Bory Tucholskie used to live. This gives the folk tradition a concrete connection to the region’s ways of life. The chapel, wayside shrine, and cemeteries, by contrast, represent different architectural and commemorative themes.

Another example of community culture was the Lubiewo municipal harvest festival, held in Klonowo on August 22, 2026. It was a harvest festival and also a shared celebration for residents of all the municipality’s villages. The harvest procession began at 2:30 p.m. and made its way to the grounds behind the village culture centre. Its date, occasion, and programme make this festival tangible as a past event; it is not an indication of a current events programme.

Comparing Walking and Cycling Routes

Several described routes pass through Klonowo and vary in mode of travel and length. The “Szlak żołnierzy września 1939 r.” (Route of the September 1939 Soldiers) commemorates the battles of the 35th Infantry Regiment in the Bory Tucholskie. A route description from 2013 gives its length as approximately 60 kilometres and leads via Klonowo, Lubiewo, Szewinek, Nowy Jasiniec, and Stronno to Bydgoszcz. The Leona Wyczółkowski Trail is 16 kilometres long and runs from Sokole Kuźnica via Klonowo and Lake Jezioro Strzyżyny Wielkie to Pruszcz. For cyclists, the 166-kilometre CB-11n cycle route passes through Klonowo; 46 kilometres of the route lie in Tuchola County. This route description is also dated 2013. The lengths allow a direct comparison of the different routes without conflating walking and cycling routes. If you are planning a trip, check the current route information.

When looking for a holiday apartment, your travel interests can help you decide: would you like to focus mainly on local history and places of remembrance, or include one of the described walking and cycling routes in your plans? Klonowo offers two clearly distinct themes to choose from. Match your choice of accommodation to the focus of your trip.
