Market Square and Remembrance

The rectangular market square is part of a historic town plan that Gniewkowo has preserved to this day. This brings together two scales: the layout of the town and a specific monument in the square. The monument commemorates Władysław Biały and was erected in 2011. It was created by Marek Guczalski, an artist from Bydgoszcz. The Baroque altar of St Anne with the Virgin and Child and a reliquary cross date from the second half of the 17th century. The Rococo altar of St Nicholas belongs to the second half of the 18th century. The high altar, in turn, is designed in the Regency style, dates from the second quarter of the 18th century and depicts Christ on the cross.

The church’s construction period and the dates of its furnishings can be clearly distinguished: the Gothic building was erected at the turn of the 14th century, in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, while the works of art mentioned belong to several later periods. The different style names also add variety: Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo and Regency stand alongside the Gothic architecture. A Mural for the Town Anniversary

A mural was created in Gniewkowo to mark the town’s 750th anniversary. This adds another form connected with the town’s history to its town plan, monument and church art.
