Willow art between two squares
Wiklinowy Deptak runs along Mickiewicza Street between Plac Niepodległości and Plac Chopina. Along this route, you can see numerous forms made of willow: umbrellas, flower beds, planters, awnings and building façades. The variety shows different uses of the same material—from individual objects to willow forms on house façades. This contrast makes the designs in the streetscape particularly vivid. Anyone interested in basketry and design will find several specific examples here, differing in form and function. The Deptak can therefore be a focus of its own during your stay; other themes include the history of the town and the natural sites of Nowy Tomyśl.
The zoo and park as another focus
Nowotomyski Ogród Zoologiczny has been in existence since 1974. It covers more than five hectares and is located within the grounds of the over 30-hectare Parku Kultury i Wypoczynku. The zoo and the park are therefore on different scales: the zoo occupies part of the larger park grounds. The stated area of the zoo may change if it is redeveloped in the future. Compared with the willow art theme, this place offers a different way to experience Nowy Tomyśl and complements the town’s attractions with a zoo and park.
City history and nature
The Nowotomyski Szlak Turystyczno-Historyczny runs through Nowy Tomyśl and near its most historically and touristically interesting sites. Stylized information boards provide details about the history of buildings, people and events. They also describe the advantages of tourist and leisure sites and attractions. The themed trail therefore draws attention to more than just buildings: the town’s people and events, as well as its leisure sites, are among the topics it covers.
Ptasia Wyspa in Feliks-Szołdrski Park offers a different perspective. The island, woven from willow, protects the birds that nest there. Here, the weaving material is not just a design element but is also connected to a specific protective function. This adds a connection to nature to the visible willow forms along the Deptak.
Nowy Tomyśl in the wider area
In the wider destination of Neutomischl, the Muzeum Wikliniarstwa i Chmielarstwa in Nowy Tomyśl is the only museum of its kind in Poland. The Ogólnopolski Konkurs Plecionkarski is an annual basketry competition held in the second half of August. Dates may vary, so check the latest dates before your trip if you plan to attend the competition.
The wider destination of Neutomischl also includes two routes with different focuses. The yellow hiking trail starts in Nowy Tomyśl and continues via Paproć, Chojniki and Szarki; its route may change. Szlak Wikliny is an approximately 113-kilometre cycling loop through the municipalities of Miedzichowo and Nowy Tomyśl. Check the current signposting on site before setting out on this cycling route.
