Krotoszyn: History, Nature and Activities
Accommodation in Krotoszyn
In Krotoszyn, traces of the town’s history meet a museum covering a wide range of subjects, while trails, protected areas and swimming pools add further highlights. This makes it easy to combine culture, nature or activities in Krotoszyn, depending on your interests. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, consider whether you’d like your days to focus more on museums and architectural history, outdoor routes or swimming pools.
Museum and architectural history
The Hieronim Ławniczak Regional Museum displays more than 1,300 objects in its permanent exhibition. Archaeology, local folk culture and regional art sit side by side, offering different ways to explore the region’s history and cultural life. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions several times a year on historical, artistic, natural history and regional subjects. If you’d like to see a particular special exhibition, check the current dates before your visit.
The architecture also reflects different periods. Krotoszanka, a wooden arcaded house dating from the second half of the 18th century, is considered the oldest surviving house in Krotoszyn. The town hall was built around 1689, replacing an earlier wooden building. The two structures offer distinct historical points of reference: a wooden residential house on the one hand, and a town hall that replaced a building made of the same material on the other. The grounds of the “Wojska Polskiego” landscape park date from the first half of the 19th century; two ponds with fountains define the setting.
Compare walking and cycling routes
For a day’s walk, the red “Krotoszyn–Baszków” trail connects the two places named on the route over 15.3 kilometres. The cycling routes cover longer distances: the black “Wokół Krotoszyna” route is 44.1 kilometres, and the green “Krotoszyńskie Dąbrowy” route is 39.3 kilometres. For these three options, the activity and distance are clear points of comparison, helping you plan a walk or cycle ride without treating the routes as equivalent.
In the wider travel region, the 4.3-kilometre “Ekologiczna ścieżka przyrodnicza” nature trail runs through the “Mszar Bogdaniec” peat bog nature reserve. The reserve protects peat bogs and part of a forest with marsh and bog vegetation. The trail also passes through the “Baszków” floristic nature reserve, which protects a population of royal fern. The trail has six educational stations. The “Miejski Bór” floristic nature reserve, located near Krotoszyn, offers a different botanical highlight: it is home to two protected plant species, honeysuckle and ivy. The “Dąbrowy Krotoszyńskie Baszków–Rochy” protected landscape area is also protected under Natura 2000 and lies partly within Krotoszyn County.
Swimming pools and regional culture
The two swimming pools in Krotoszyn also differ considerably. The indoor pool at the “WODNIK” Sports and Leisure Centre has two pools and an indoor slide more than 50 metres long. The outdoor pool complex includes a 50 × 25-metre swimming pool, as well as a children’s pool and a paddling pool for toddlers. When planning your day, you can choose between an indoor pool with a long slide and an outdoor pool complex with pools for different age groups.
If you’d like to explore regional culture beyond the individual towns, Krotoszyn County also offers historical and culinary themes. A wooden town hall dating from 1743 is said to be the only one of its kind in Greater Poland and Europe. A small-town ensemble also preserves a town layout with two market squares and an elongated square, recalling three former towns. The annual “Powiat od kuchni” festival is a culinary highlight: Krotoszyn County is the main organiser, and local specialities are served.
