Licheń Stary draws visitors to sacred architecture, historical collections and places for quiet reflection. The Licheń Basilica, St. Dorothy’s Church, Golgotha and the Józef Jarzębowski Museum each offer a different perspective. When choosing a holiday apartment in Licheń Stary, it is worth first considering what you want to shape your stay: monumental architecture and organ music, a parish church with several stages of construction, a designed pilgrimage site or a collection that continues to grow. This lets you plan your trip around a cultural focus, rather than treating all the sights as equivalent stops.

The Basilica: Building and Organ

The Licheń Basilica was built between 1994 and 2004 and is the largest sacred building in Poland. Its construction period sets it apart from the building history of St. Dorothy’s Church, which dates back to 1854. Those interested in architecture can therefore explore two different timelines: the construction of the basilica within a decade and the later development of the parish church through additions and alterations.

The basilica’s organ ensemble is named after Saint John Paul II. It is currently the largest organ ensemble in Poland and the fourth largest in Europe. It can be heard during every Holy Mass and at scheduled concerts. Mass and concerts offer different listening experiences; specific concert dates may vary. So if you are planning your visit specifically for the organ music, check the concert dates in advance.

St. Dorothy’s Church and Its Building History

St. Dorothy’s Church in Licheń Stary is a Neo-Gothic parish church founded by the Kwilecki family. It dates from 1854. The presbytery, or chancel, was added in 1872; the sacristy and vestibule followed in 1903. The church was remodeled and enlarged in 1978. Its history can thus be read as a sequence of construction, additions and later renovation. In comparison with the basilica, the focus here is on its Neo-Gothic character and the documented development of a parish church.

Golgotha and the Museum

Golgotha in Licheń Stary is a 25-metre-high hill made of stone and concrete. Its features include maze-like passages, grottos, chapels, figures and reliefs. A winding path leads to the summit and is used for quiet reflection during pilgrimages. In contrast to the basilica, the site is defined by its height, design features and pilgrimage route.

The Józef Jarzębowski Museum in Licheń Stary has more than ten thousand exhibits, and its collection continues to grow. This extensive, developing collection adds another cultural perspective to the sacred buildings and pilgrimage route. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between architecture, the path and reflection, and the museum’s holdings: at the museum, the exhibits take centre stage.

Visiting the Papal Apartments

The Papal Apartments can only be visited on a guided tour, which is free of charge. On weekdays, visits can be arranged in advance with the Pilgrim Services Office. If you are planning a visit, arrange the time with the office beforehand and check when tours are currently available.
