Town Hall and the History of the Town

Dąbie Town Hall was built between 1811 and 1814. It stands on Plac Mickiewicza at the northwestern corner of the market square, opposite the north façade of St Nicholas Church. This precise location makes the market square a concrete point of reference for finding your way through the town’s history. The period when the town hall was built is also one of the key historical dates: the building dates from the early 19th century.

A cultural-historical exploration of Dąbie extends beyond the town hall. The brick synagogue was built from 1882 to 1885 in the eclectic style. A special detail has been preserved in its attic: on the east side is a small surviving fragment of Hebrew polychromy bearing the text “Truly, this is the house of God.” The combination of architectural style, precise construction dates and the surviving text fragment gives the synagogue its own historical significance.

Religious Buildings and Cemeteries

The Evangelical-Augsburg church is another historical landmark in Dąbie. It was built on ul. 1-go Maja and is now privately owned. This current status matters when considering the town’s building history: the church is part of the town’s history, while also being a privately owned building.

The Baptist church is another distinctive trace of the past. It is currently the best-preserved monument attesting to Dutch settlement in the Łęczyca region. In this way, it points to a different aspect of regional history than the town hall and synagogue. Together with the various churches, it presents a multifaceted picture of religious and architectural heritage, while their histories should not be treated as interchangeable.

The cemeteries add to this picture. The Evangelical cemetery in Dąbie was established in the first half of the 19th century. Since 2003, neglected gravestones of historical and artistic value have been systematically restored at the Roman Catholic cemetery. The details about their establishment and restoration highlight different aspects: one cemetery is distinguished by its historic layout, while the ongoing work on the gravestones takes centre stage at the other.

Wetlands and Things to Do in the Municipality

Dąbskie Błota provides a habitat for birds that live in wetlands. The species mentioned include cranes, herons and rails. For travellers interested in birdlife and landscapes, this natural setting offers a contrast to the town’s architectural and cultural heritage. When choosing Dąbie as a destination, you can consider whether you would like your stay to focus mainly on local history or also include nature.

For an active outing, there is also a kayaking route on the Ner that is just under 20 kilometres long. It starts in the municipality of Świnice Warckie and ends in the municipality of Dąbie. The route is therefore an activity spanning two municipalities and should not be assumed to start in the town of Dąbie. The Grabina nature and educational trail in the municipality also has parking spaces for seven cars. Keeping these options in mind, distinguishing between the town and the municipality can help you clearly define your travel interests.
