Market Square and City History

A good starting point for exploring Kępno’s townscape is the square-shaped market square. It covers an area of 1 hectare and shapes the historic urban layout. In its centre stands the town hall, built in 1835: a two-storey masonry building in the Classicist style, with a clock tower. The Muzeum Ziemi Kępińskiej im. T. P. Potworowskiego is also located on the market square. It is housed in a building erected in 1846, which served as the municipal administration office until 1975. The central square therefore brings together the museum’s present-day use and a building that once served a municipal administrative function.

The museum’s permanent exhibition, “Z historii Kępna”, presents the town’s history. It is joined by “Dziedzictwo Żydowskie w Kępnie” and “Kolory Potworowskiego”. The three exhibition titles direct attention to different themes: Kępno’s past, Jewish heritage and Potworowski’s colours. This can help you define your cultural interests more precisely when planning your trip, rather than treating a museum visit as just another general item on the itinerary.

Buildings with Distinctive Character

Buildings with their own distinct architectural styles can also be found beyond the museum. Kępno’s synagogue was built in 1814–1815 to replace an earlier wooden synagogue. Its monumental Tuscan portico references the façade of the opera house in Potsdam. The present-day Roman Catholic Church of St Martin was built in 1911 in the Neo-Baroque style. It contains an 18th-century high altar and Baroque sculptures from earlier altars. The two buildings thus represent different religious and architectural chapters in the town’s history.

Other distinctive details add to the picture: the present-day post office building was constructed in 1888–1889 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The water tower is 42.5 metres tall. Its design is Neo-Gothic, with restrained Romanesque influences; the roof references Baroque design. If you are interested in architectural forms, you can explore these different features as themes in their own right during a stay in Kępno, rather than reducing the town’s history to a single building. In the nearby area northwest of Kępno, the so-called Kopiec preserves the remains of a medieval fortification that existed from the first half of the 13th century to the second half of the 15th century.

Walking Trails and City Park

Two Wielkopolska walking trails run through Kępno. The yellow WK, OP, ŁD-193y trail passes, among other places, over the Kępno viaduct by the railway station and across the Samica River. The blue WK-3672N trail runs from the main railway station via Kopiec to the Przemysłowa housing estate. The routes differ in the landmarks mentioned: the viaduct and river crossing are notable points on the yellow trail, while the blue trail links Kopiec and the Przemysłowa housing estate. When planning, you can consider which of these places and sections of the trails interest you most.

For a quieter spell among the greenery, the city park offers paved paths and walking trails, as well as park lighting. It also has an outdoor fitness area with equipment specially adapted for older people. Kępno lies on the Wysoczyzna Wieruszowska, beside the Niesób River, also known locally as the Samica. This geographical setting adds a river and surrounding landscape to the town’s character, without reducing the place to a single attraction or just one kind of stay.
