Tjøme offers different sides of a coastal vacation: at Verdens Ende, rocks, skerries and views of the fjord shape the landscape; in Moutmarka, trails cross rocky terrain, while places such as Tjøme Church and Gamle Ormelet complement nature experiences with culture. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider whether you want to focus primarily on the coast, hiking, activities in the national park or cultural discoveries.

Coast and Landscape Around Verdens Ende

Verdens Ende is a recreational area with fjord views, rocks, fishing spots and skerries. In the area of Færder National Park near Verdens Ende, possible activities include boat trips, paddling, water sports, hiking, fishing and swimming. If you enjoy spending your vacation days by the water, you’ll find various ways to experience the coast here—from views of the skerries to getting out on the water.

A different coastal landscape awaits you at Mostranda on the southwest side of Tjøme. There are two sandy beaches and numerous rocky outcrops. Mostranda is 5 km from the center of Tjøme, in the direction of Verdens Ende. Parking is available at the campsite or 200 meters before it. This information helps distinguish between the town center and a stay focused on the coast when planning your vacation.

Færder National Park also offers diverse landscapes. Across the wider travel area, these include deciduous forests, coastal pine forests, coastal meadows, traditional hay meadows, kelp forests and seagrass meadows. The range extends beyond the rocks and skerries at Verdens Ende to include a variety of forest and coastal habitats.

Hiking Trails and Active Days

The Færderstien runs across Tjøme as far as Verdens Ende. This family-friendly trail is suitable for short and long hikes and can be walked in sections. That way, you can tailor your hike to your preferred distance rather than planning to walk the entire trail in one continuous outing.

In Moutmarka, an approximately 3 km blue-marked coastal trail runs from Mostranda to Skåebukta. The terrain is rocky and often windy. The Moutmarka trail also starts at the parking lot near Verdens Ende and crosses small boulders, pebbles and grassy mounds on its way to Mostranda. These descriptions give you two specific points of reference for planning your walks: an approximate distance for the marked coastal trail and the changing terrain on the route to Mostranda.

If you’re looking for a particularly active adventure, consider Via Ferrata Tjøme. The climbing route on Tjøme offers a four-hour climb with airy rappelling sections, ending with a ride on a zipline. The route offers views of the skerries in Færder National Park. This outing is quite different from the hiking trails and is suited to travelers who want to include a climbing experience in their time on Tjøme.

Culture, History and Local Gathering Places

Tjøme Church is a Neo-Gothic long church built of stone and brick. It was constructed in 1866 on the site of an earlier medieval church. Elements of the old stone church have been preserved, including an altarpiece carved by Abel Schrøder between 1670 and 1676 and a pulpit from the same period. The building’s history and preserved furnishings offer different historical perspectives in the same place.

Torås Fort, a coastal fort, offers a chance to learn about another part of the area’s history. The fort has been decommissioned; its grounds are open to visitors all year round. In summer, the museum and museum café are open on weekends. At Verdens Ende, the Seaman’s Wife also commemorates the women who waited at home longing for sailors to return. The Vippefyr there is a 1932 replica made from stones from Tjøme’s local beaches.

Gamle Ormelet is now primarily run as a gallery and concert venue for locals and summer visitors. In the center of Tjøme, POUR is located right next to Vinmonopolet. It hosts themed evenings featuring wine tastings, beer tastings, workshops and knitting nights; everyone is welcome. These places offer a cultural addition to days spent by the water and on the hiking trails as you plan your vacation.

Visitor Center and Getting Your Bearings

The Færder National Park Visitor Center is located at Verdens Ende on the southern tip of Tjøme. It shares information about the national park through exhibitions, family-friendly activities, guided experiences and educational programs. The 360-degree panoramic room offers views of the Vippefyr, Færder Lighthouse, the skerries and the national park landscape. The national park at Verdens Ende is accessible by car, boat and public transportation.

There are several ways to choose the focus of your vacation: coastal landscapes at Verdens Ende and Mostranda, hikes on the Færderstien or in Moutmarka, the climbing route, and cultural sites in Tjøme. You can also discover other destinations in Sandefjord and Duken.
