Hvasser: Coastal Trails, Beaches and Sailing Tradition
Accommodation in Hvasser
Circular hikes, varied coastal landscapes and a vibrant sailing tradition give Hvasser a diverse character. You can explore the area on foot, compare its beaches or learn about its maritime history. A cycling experience also takes you via Tjøme to Hvasser, offering another perspective on the coastal landscape.
Walking trails with varied character
“Hvasser rundt” is an 11.2 km circular hike around Hvasser. For a shorter loop, “Hvasser nord” offers a route of about 3.6 km. It starts either in Sandøsund or at the car park near Lilleskagen. The different route lengths make it easier to tailor your hiking plans to the tour you want to take.
The terrain is also relevant when planning: the section of “Hvasser nord” between Sandøsund and Lilleskagen partly follows a narrow, rocky and uneven path. West of Lilleskagen, the route mostly follows wide footpaths or gravel paths, and partly runs on asphalt. When choosing a route, you can consider these specific surface conditions as well as its length.
Beaches and coastal landscapes
Fynsletta combines several distinct features: the beach is partly sandy, there is a large grassy area alongside it, and the water is shallow. Fynsletta is considered family-friendly, with toilets and good parking facilities. Its listed amenities and beach features help you get a sense of what the place is like.
Lilleskagen also offers varied coastal landscapes, where sandy beach meets rocky shore. The area is considered child-friendly and has toilets and good parking facilities. The car park is about a five-minute walk away. In Kruke, also known as Sandøsund, there is a natural sandy beach on the inner side of the harbour. These details highlight how the different beach locations vary, rather than reducing them to a single type of coastline.
Sailing tradition and coastal history
Færder Seilforening upholds the traditions of the Meginjollen and Færdersnekkene boats. For the Færdersnekkene, the “Røssesundløpet” is the classic regatta course: it goes around Hvasser and Brøtsø and starts in Sandøsund. Krukehavn marina on Hvasser has berths for 25 boats, some of which can be up to 40 feet long.
The Hvasser Coastal Museum in Loshuset in Sandøsund offers more insight into the area’s maritime past. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the Hvasser pilot station. Hvasser kirke offers a different cultural highlight: the wooden long church has tall, Gothic-style windows. Its cornerstone was laid on 6 May 1902, and it was consecrated on 26 June 1903. Parking at the church is limited; alternative parking is a little farther away.
Cycling and exploring the surrounding area

Popular activities there include boating, kayaking, hiking and swimming.
