Discover Ramnes: Church, Farms and River Landscape
Accommodation in Ramnes
Discover Ramnes through three distinct themes: Romanesque church architecture, rural local history and the river landscape along the Ramneselva. These highlights offer different ways to plan a trip. Ramnes kirke represents medieval architecture; Bygdetunet Brår and Ramnes Søndre gård offer other points of interest, while Mølledammen connects historical traces with a seasonal natural feature.
Romanesque architecture in Ramnes
Ramnes kirke was built during the 12th century. Its Romanesque style is evident in the rounded arches of its windows and portals. It is one of four surviving medieval churches in Tønsberg Municipality. Its oldest bell also has a special local history: it is considered the oldest church bell cast in this district. The construction period, architecture and bell offer different ways to explore local history, from medieval church building to regional bell founding.
Ramnessletta and Mølledammen
The valley around Ramnes kirke and the former municipal centre of Tingvoll opens out into the large, cultivated plain of Ramnessletta. In addition to its historic buildings, the landscape gives Ramnes another, distinctly rural side. If your holiday planning focuses particularly on the surroundings, Ramnessletta is a specific point of reference for this theme.
At Mølledammen on the Ramneselva, remnants of dam timber date back to the 16th century. The fish ladder there consists of seven deep pools. Sea trout and, occasionally, salmon use it in autumn to travel upstream and spawn in Askjerdalen. Here, two different timescales meet: historical traces spanning several centuries and a fish migration that takes place in autumn. There is also a bathing ladder at Mølledammen. Check local conditions before swimming.
Farm history and local traditions
Bygdetunet Brår is an old farm used by the Ramnes Historical Society as a local history and open-air museum. This brings the agricultural history of Ramnes into focus alongside its church history. The Åpen gård event offers another facet of the farm: a notice from 2023 describes it as taking place annually on the last weekend of August. Before travelling, check whether the event is still being held and when the next date is.
Ramnes Søndre gård also brings several offerings together in one place. Since 2016, the farm has operated an open visitor farm, a farm shop and a farm bakery. There are 12 different animal species on the farm, and campfire activities are also offered. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information about opening hours and activities before you travel.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When looking for a holiday rental in Ramnes, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: church and local history, farm life or the river landscape. The different themes let you discover Ramnes according to your own travel interests, without limiting your stay to just one type of outing.
