Nevlunghamn is a fishing village with small white houses, fishing and sailing boats in the harbor, and views of the Skagerrak. The harbor is small and easy to explore: you can take a stroll or sit on a bench. At the same time, the coastal hiking trail, protected landscapes, and a long connection with fishing all shape the village. This mix makes Nevlunghamn an interesting destination for travelers who want to spend their vacation between the harbor setting, cultural history, and experiences in the coastal landscape.

Harbor and Coastal Culture

Nevlunghamn has had an organized fish landing site since the late 19th century. Fishermen also sold some of their catch directly from their boats to customers. The harbor and fish landing site are therefore just as much a part of the village as the boats on the water. Nevlunghamn was also an old pilot and customs station—a further facet of its maritime history.

The settlement comprises around 70 buildings that together evoke Vestfold’s coastal culture. Nevlunghamn is designated a cultural landscape of regional and national conservation value. One distinctive example is Loshuset: the entire building, including its interior, has remained unchanged since around 1905. Visitors interested in local history and traditional coastal culture will find more here than just a backdrop of white houses and boats.

The village’s history also includes Rekefabrikken at Vadboholmen in Nevlunghamn: from 1983 to 1993, it operated under the name “Rekefabrikken Galleri og Industrimuseum.” Tvisten fyr, visible from Nevlunghamn, was built in 1908.

On the Kyststien

The 35-kilometer-long Kyststien passes through Nevlunghamn and is just a few minutes away. It is Norway’s oldest coastal hiking trail and was completed in 1991. Travelers planning their trip around hiking and landscape experiences can think of Nevlunghamn as a place where the trail itself runs through the settlement. Mølen can also be reached on foot from Nevlunghamn via the Kyststien.

Mølen has 230 burial mounds dating from the Early Iron Age to the Bronze Age. The site is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark and is protected. In addition, 316 bird species have been recorded there, and more than 100 different types of rock can be found at Mølen. The combination of archaeological traces, birdlife, and geology gives this outing a different focus from a stroll around the harbor. When planning your visit, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus more on local history, wildlife observation, or the coastal trail.

Cliffs, Beach, and Waves

The Kyststien passes through the striking landscape of Saltstein. The terrain is shaped by rugged cliffs, numerous headlands of volcanic origin, and deep ravines. During the last ice age, the glacier ground down and polished the rocks. The waters off Saltstein are considered one of Norway’s best surfing areas. Oddane Sand, a bathing beach, is also located southwest of Nevlunghamn.

These places offer different experiences: Saltstein is known for its striking rock formations and surf waters, Oddane Sand is described as a bathing beach, and Mølen combines landscape with burial mounds and a great variety of rock types. Oddane Fort is also near the destination. Visitor access is closed, but guided tours are available by prior arrangement. If you are planning to visit, it is important to note the difference between the closed public access and the tours on offer.

Sauna as Another Vacation Highlight

Kur Sauna is located at Omrestranda in Nevlunghamn. It offers sauna sessions with cold-water bathing and aufguss rituals year-round. This adds a distinct wellness focus to hiking, coastal landscapes, and local history. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, it may help to first consider which aspects of the destination matter most to you: the harbor and its history, exploring the Kyststien, the landscapes around Mølen and Saltstein, or the sauna.
