Holmestrand between the coastal path and Eidsfoss
Accommodation in Holmestrand
Holmestrand offers different kinds of holiday experiences: the Kyststien runs between Holmestrand and Sande through forests and across rocky coastal terrain; in Eidsfoss, the focus is on lakes, paddling and the history of ironworking. Dulpen, with its sandy beach and bathing pier, adds another distinctive touch. When choosing the focus of your holiday, consider whether you would mainly like to explore the outdoors, spend time by the water, or discover historic places and crafts.
On foot or by bike along the Kyststien
The Kyststien between Holmestrand and Sande is approximately 13 km long. People of all ages can use it for short or long trips on foot or by bike. Around 7 km of the path follows a disused railway line: the route passes through the forest, along the water and across rocky coastal terrain. These varied landscapes offer changing impressions along the way, without requiring you to stick to just one way of getting around. You can tailor your choice of a shorter outing or a longer trip to your day's plans.
At Smørstein, the disused railway tunnel on the Kyststien is also an attraction. The tunnel is now illuminated. It adds a distinctive historical note to a trip that also takes you through the forest, along the water and over rocky terrain.
Beach time and paddling by the water
Dulpen has a sandy beach, a bathing pier, two purpose-built beach volleyball courts and toilets. This makes it easy to combine time by the water with different activities: you can visit the beach, use the pier or plan a game of beach volleyball. If you would rather spend time on a lake than have a beach day, you can rent canoes and SUP boards in Eidsfoss to explore Eikeren or Bergsvannet and their surroundings.
Near Holmestrand, you can also use the “Tvillingbru” paddling shelter for free and without a reservation. This offers another practical option for a break during a stay focused on the water.
Eidsfoss: lakes, trails and ironworking
Eidsfoss lies between the lakes Bergsvannet and Eikeren. The Kulturstien trail runs through natural landscapes and historic building complexes. If you would rather get to know the area on foot, this offers a different way to explore it than by canoe or SUP board. You can shape your visit around your preferred focus: water and paddling, or nature and historic buildings.
The town's history can also be discovered through specific buildings and collections. Eidsfos Hovedgård was built around 1750 as the residence of the owner of the Eidsfoss works and was listed for protection in 1923. The Jernverksmuseet in Eidsfoss displays impressive iron stove art from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as sturdy cast-iron craftsmanship. Botne kirke is a medieval stone church from the 13th century, located in the municipality of Holmestrand. These places and subjects offer different cultural points of interest for your trip: architecture, church construction and the tradition of ironworking.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
Several trains run through Holmestrand every day. They connect the town with the rest of Vestfold, Drammen and Oslo. The E18 between Oslo and Kristiansand runs just outside Holmestrand. Train connections and road access are useful points of reference when planning your journey. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding which experiences you want to shape your stay: the Kyststien and Dulpen, or the lakes, paddling and culture in Eidsfoss.
