Øyslebø: Cultural History and Hiking

Øyslebø offers special insights into regional architectural and cultural history, as well as trails through the surrounding landscape. At Mjålandsstova, you can encounter an exceptional form of interior decoration; Øyslebø Church preserves historic furnishings. Rosemaling, Church Art and a Cultural Centre

Mjålandsstova is considered Vest-Agder’s only surviving secular room decorated with rosemaling. Olav Toresen Kvinlaug painted the room with light, detailed decoration featuring biblical motifs. The building also contains an older årestova, which is thought to date from the early 17th century. As an open-air museum, Mjålandsstova shows how people lived and made their homes in the 19th century. The room and the older årestova thus offer different insights into the history of the house.

Øyslebø Church also combines a historic building with older works of art: the cruciform church dates from 1797 and stands on an old, protected church site. Its furnishings include an altarpiece, a pulpit and a 16th-century baptismal font. Art and museum exhibitions are the focus at Høgtun Cultural Centre. The building was originally built as a folk high school in 1922 and was then located in the municipality of Øyslebø. Today, the former director’s residence serves as a museum space; Sigurd Nome’s sculpture collection is also exhibited there. The site comprises four buildings in total. This gives the cultural centre several dimensions: its former use, the museum space and the sculpture collection on display.

Hikes with Different Routes

The hike to Masta is about 6.5 km long and follows tractor roads and paths. Along the way, there are views over Øyslebø and the surrounding hills. The route is well marked; an information board and a map are located at the starting point. This information helps you get an overview of the route before setting out. For families who enjoy hiking together, the trail markers and information board provide practical points of reference for planning the walk.

The circular hike at Nomeheia is listed as shorter, at about 5 km, and passes through varied landscape with viewpoints and open heath or woodland. Some sections of the route cross marshland. When choosing a hike, you can weigh up whether the circular route, with its changing landscapes, or the Masta route, with the described views over Øyslebø and the surrounding hills, better suits your interests.

Another option is Håfjelle: the trail follows an old cart track. The ascent is steep and partly rocky; at the summit, there are far-reaching views. The trail then continues along further old cart tracks. This tour therefore differs from the other hikes mentioned because its steep ascent is explicitly described. Reach Øyslebø by Bike

A bike ride along the Mandalselva runs from the centre of Mandal to Øyslebø and is about 36 km for the round trip. The terrain is mostly flat with a slight incline. The route reaches Øyslebø via a gravel road; there are several fishing spots and good places to rest along the way.
