Ljosland: Trails, peaks and mountain nature
Accommodation in Ljosland
Ljosland lies in the mountains of southern Norway and provides access to Setesdal Vesthei. High-mountain nature and peaks over 1,000 metres define the area. For planning your holiday, it helps to ask a simple question: should your trip focus mainly on hiking, winter ski trails, swimming spots, or discovering mountain plants and local history?
Mountain scenery and Ljosland kapell
Ljosland kapell stands high and unobstructed in Ljoslandsgarden. From there, you can look out over Ljoslandsvatnet and the mighty mountains all around. The chapel was consecrated by Bishop Kaare Støylen on 21 June 1959; Alf Erikstad was its architect. An abandoned schoolhouse near Lognavatn and new materials were used in its construction. The chapel was built by Trygve Roland and Tore Tveitstøl. In this way, the area’s mountain scenery is linked to a specific building history.
Ljosland is also home to Ljosland Fjellstove, located on the left just after the turn-off to Ljosland kapell. It offers peace and quiet, good food and beautiful nature. Its location gives the fjellstove a distinctive point of reference for anyone interested in stopping for a meal as well as exploring trails and peaks during their trip.
Hiking trails, peaks and mountain hut
DNT Sør’s extensive network of red-marked trails starts in Ljosland. A marked summer route leads from here to the DNT hut Lakkenstova. If you are considering a specific peak as your destination, Skoræ lies west of Ljosland. At 1,041 metres, it is considered Norway’s southernmost peak over 1,000 metres and also the highest mountain in Åseral municipality. The marked trail runs from Farevatn through Farstøldalen to the trail junction at Skorstean; from there, it is another two kilometres to the summit. Cairns mark parts of the route. There is a car park at Ljosland Skisenter.
Lakkenstova lies north of Skoræ and Lisla Øyvatn, in the southern Setesdalsheiene, above the tree line in rocky highlands. The DNT hut is unstaffed, unlocked and stocked with supplies. The main building has 26 beds, and the emergency shelter has a further 10. There is also a separate room for dogs and their owners. The round trip from Ljosland Skisenter is about 14 kilometres; parking is available at the ski centre. Information about the route and the hut can help you plan the hike as a focus of your trip.
There are trails in winter too: a prepared or marked network of cross-country ski trails connects Ljosland with the mountain huts. The tour options described therefore vary by season and activity: in summer, a marked route leads to Lakkenstova, while in winter, the ski trail connections take centre stage. Which of these options matters for your trip can be a useful criterion when looking for a holiday apartment in Ljosland.
Another hiking trail leads from Øvregardsbrua in Ljosland along Langevatn to Heiegarden Pytten. The farm belongs to Bygland municipality and is most easily reached from Ljosland and Langevatn. At Fosstjønn, the route becomes a clearly defined hiking path. So, alongside the trails to peaks and huts, you can also consider a route to a farm in Bygland municipality when planning your trip.
Swimming spots and mountain plants
For a different focus, the municipality lists several swimming spots in Ljosland: the river by Ljosland Fjellstove, the waterfall between Tjønna and Langevatn, Ljoslandsvatnet by the cabin area in Kløystøl, and Grønlitjønn. These different locations give you several named options for including time by the water in your holiday plans.
Ljosland Fjellhage is a public garden featuring Norway’s mountain plants. The garden is free to visit and easily accessible for wheelchair users. This botanical discovery adds another option to the choice between hiking, peaks and swimming spots. When planning your trip together, you can consider which of these interests should take priority without limiting your days to just one theme.
