Høydalsmo: Cross-country skiing, ski play and cultural history

Høydalsmo combines winter sports with a remarkable cultural history. Located on the E134, the town is considered the gateway to Tokke municipality. Høydalsmo has a modern cross-country skiing arena. The Høydalsmo IL trail network includes routes of 2.5 km, 3 km, 5 km and 10 km. These different route lengths give you a concrete reference for planning your day, without implying anything about duration or difficulty. The starting point is at the ski stadium by Høydalsmo school. The network was modernised for the 2002 Norwegian Championships; later, Høydalsmo IL also hosted World Cup races and other major events.

If you’re interested in ski play, Oftejordet offers free activities. The facility includes ski jumps, rails and a forest trail. The Oftejordet Challenge is also held every year on the Oftejordet grounds. Nearby, between Høydalsmo and Åmot, is the popular Skinan ski area on Grønliheia, which is part of the Høydalsmo trail network. The Telemark Hoppanlegg Huka has a snow-secure 90-metre ski jump. This means that Høydalsmo and its surroundings offer a range of specific winter sports activities, including cross-country skiing, ski play and ski jumping.

History and art in Eidsborg

The Vest-Telemark Museum Eidsborg offers an insight into the history of whetstone mining in Eidsborg and its export to Europe. Whetstones have been exported from the quarries in Eidsborg since the early Viking Age. The museum grounds include more than 30 buildings, including the Stålekleivloftet, dating from 1184. The many buildings and the history of mining offer different ways to explore the area’s cultural history.

Another historic highlight is Eidsborg stave church. It may have been built shortly before 1150, making it one of Norway’s five oldest stave churches. Art is another discovery to make: Galleri Karen exhibits and sells works in acrylic, watercolour and wax, created with an iron. The cultural offerings therefore range from medieval architectural history to a variety of artistic techniques.
