Flatdal is a place of striking contrasts: from the Nylende viewpoint, you can look across the flat, green valley floor towards the steep Skorve Wall. There are also cleared and marked hiking trails, a summit hike to Bindingsnuten, and art and architectural history. This lets you shape your trip around your own interests—from scenic views to outdoor activities and culture.

Valley views and scenery

Nylende is a designated stopping point along the road. The viewpoint structure highlights the contrast between Flatdal’s flat, green valley floor and the steep Skorve Wall. From there, the view stretches across Flatdal and towards the Skorve Wall. Unlike the route to Bindingsnuten, which is described as a hike, Nylende is a roadside stop. If you are weighing up different kinds of scenic experiences, a viewpoint and a summit hike are two distinct options.

Trails with different destinations

Several hiking trails and paths in Flatdal have been cleared and marked. One specifically described option is the summit hike to Bindingsnuten: the well-prepared circular route is about 7 km long. Bindingsnuten is the mountain above Nutheim Gjestgiveri in Flatdal. If you prefer a named destination and an approximate circular route for a day of hiking, this trail is a clearly defined option.

Flatdal is also one of the areas with cross-country ski trails. Hiking and cross-country skiing therefore offer different activity options when planning your trip. Another destination is the Dagsturhytta Høyselet. The route there follows a well-prepared gravel path through Flatdal’s wetlands, the Flatdalsøyan, and past the Nature Lab (Naturlaben). Unlike the circular mountain route, this route passes through wetlands and leads to the day-trip destination Høyselet. If your travel group has varied interests, these offer different themes for planning your day.

Church, regional art and art in the landscape

Flatdal Church is a wooden long church built in 1654 on the site of an earlier stave church. The church houses the crucifix, altarpiece and canopy from the earlier stave church. Bishop Bernt Støylen had these furnishings recovered in 1923 and installed in Flatdal Church. The church building and its furnishings thus tell of two different periods in the area’s history: the construction of the long church and the later installation of objects from the earlier stave church.

You can also encounter art in Flatdal beyond this architectural history. There are three so-called “Viewing Stones”; each stone has a bench where you can view art in the landscape. Galleri Nutheim exhibits art by artists from the region. The two offerings have different focuses: at the Viewing Stones, the emphasis is on viewing art in the landscape, while the gallery focuses on regional art. Nutheim Guest House caters to bus groups and other groups with meals and a tour of the gallery.

Planning a stay in Flatdal

If you are looking for holiday accommodation in Flatdal, you can start by considering which aspect of the area you want to shape your stay: hiking trails, cross-country skiing, scenery or culture. The range of destinations and themes gives you concrete ways to weigh up your interests for the trip. If you would like to combine several focuses, you can include the views from Nylende, hiking trails, art and the church’s history as separate themes in your plans.
