Treungen: Hiking, Culture and Railway History

Treungen offers a variety of ways to explore together: a marked hiking trail up 786-metre-high Skuggenatten, trails at Røyrodden near Lake Nisser, and a distinctive railway history. There is also the Z-Museum with its extensive collections, and Treungen Church. Whether you prefer spending time outdoors or focusing on culture and local history, you can shape your holiday around a range of experiences here.

Hiking trails, mountain race and the shore at Røyrodden

Skuggenatten is a hiking mountain in Treungen. Its trail starts at Rv41 and is signposted and marked. Allow about three hours for the round trip. The Skuggenatten Opp mountain race is also part of local life: Treungen IL organises it every year.

Near Treungen, Røyrodden offers a different selection of trails. There is a family-friendly five-kilometre circular trail. The short loop is 1.3 kilometres long and leads to a bathing spot on the shore of Lake Nisser. For a longer walk, you can choose the loop that is 3.2 kilometres in total and heads towards the historic Årak farms. Along this longer route, hikers may see tracks left by moose, roe deer, foxes or capercaillie.

Røyrodden is also home to a grove of oaks that are almost 1,000 years old and 15 Iron Age burial mounds. Nature and history come together at Røyrodden. The short loop to the bathing spot and the longer loop mainly differ in length and destination.

Museum, church and railway history

The Z-Museum in Treungen has more than 80 themed exhibitions. These include rare cars and other vehicles, as well as the history of the telephone. The collections comprise thousands of rare objects. The museum therefore offers a range of subjects to explore, rather than focusing on a single collection.

Treungen Church also tells the story of the local area. The church was consecrated on 25 March 1863 and is a timber long church with wooden cladding. It is located in Homme, just under three kilometres from the town centre. Services, concerts and gatherings are held there throughout the year.

Treungen was the terminus of the Arendal–Nelaug–Treungen railway line. The Treungen railway reached the town in 1913 and was closed in 1967. The former railway carried ore, timber and passengers. Several railway buildings associated with the former station have been preserved; the old locomotive shed near Treungen was part of the disused Treungen railway.
