Hjartdal brings together grain processing, cultural landscapes and waterside experiences. Barley flour and barley groats are still produced at Hjartdal bygdemylle; the church and Kønnmagasinet each highlight different aspects of local history. There are also craft experiences and waterside activities at Egderudfossen. When looking for a holiday rental in Hjartdal, it helps to decide first whether culture, water or landscape should shape your holiday.

Grain, cultural landscapes and routes

Barley flour in various degrees of fineness and barley groats are still produced at Hjartdal bygdemylle. You can take a guided tour of the mill and visit a themed exhibition on the history of farming and grain in the mountain villages. This brings a present-day product together with agricultural history. If you are planning a tour, it is advisable to contact the local operator.

The Kulturlandskapssenteret shares knowledge about species-rich hay meadows. Groups are welcomed there year-round by appointment. Talks, guided tours, walks or excursions to selected nearby places can be arranged; confirm your preferred format before arrival.

The 25-kilometre Sogevegen passes through Hjartdal, Svartdal and Flatdal. Hjartdal and Svartdal are on the national list of particularly valuable cultural landscapes. The route provides a geographical link between three named places, while the designation draws attention to the value of the cultural landscape.

Church, granary and crafts

Hjartdal kirke is centrally located in Hjartdalsbygda. Built in 1809, the log church has very fine wood carvings, and a memorial stone by the church commemorates the 1540 peasant uprising. Nearby, Kønnmagasinet provides information about the old grain store, painters with ties to the area and historical landscape photographs. Local cultural history thus spans a building and a historic event, as well as a grain store, painting and landscape photography.

Funnerfellen makes sheepskin rugs and other products featuring traditional leather-printed patterns from Hjartdal and neighbouring villages. The patterns give the craft a regional connection and offer a different way to experience the cultural landscape than the mill and church do. Group visits should be arranged in advance.

Waterfall, bathing spot and sauna

At Egderudfossen, the Myllestigen footbridge offers views of the waterfall and the old municipal mill. There is also a paved bathing spot; bathing conditions vary by season. The viewpoint and bathing are two different reasons to spend time by the water: the season matters for the bathing spot, while Myllestigen offers views of the waterfall and mill.

Saga Sauna on Hjartsjåvatnet in Hjartdal offers sauna experiences with a view, as well as a shelter with barbecue facilities. Check availability before arrival. Swimming and sauna visits should be treated differently when planning: seasonal conditions matter for the bathing spot, while current availability should be checked for the sauna.

In the wider Hjartdal destination

For longer outings, the wider Hjartdal destination offers Prestevegen. The hiking trail crosses mountain and forest terrain between Fellessetra in Hjartdal and Hogstul in Tuddal; the route is listed as taking six to eight hours. It is marked with the letter P and about 20 name signs. There are several camping spots along the route. Trail conditions vary by season; check the markings and camping conditions locally.

The Brattefjell-Vindeggen protected landscape area includes parts of Hjartdal. It protects unspoilt high-mountain and mountain forest landscapes, a wild reindeer population, diverse plant and animal life, and valuable cultural landscapes and heritage sites. A seasonal food visit is also possible: in July and August, everyone is welcome to visit Bjordal Stule, where traditional rømmegrøt, coffee and waffles are served. Seasonal visiting dates may change, so check them before travelling.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can use your preferred daily rhythm to help choose: cultural programmes require advance arrangements, swimming is seasonal, and the Prestevegen takes six to eight hours. First consider whether local history, water or a longer day hike should be the deciding factor for your trip.
