Klæbu offers fascinating contrasts for your trip: a distinctive octagonal church and historic farmsteads tell the story of the area’s cultural heritage. There is also a circular trail through the centre, opportunities for hiking and kilometres of cross-country ski trails. You can tailor your holiday rental search to whether you want to include architectural history, outdoor activities or both in your trip.

Cultural history between church and farmstead

Klæbu Church stands out for its octagonal shape. Dating from 1790, it has a self-supporting vaulted roof without internal columns. The history of the site goes back much further: a simple stave church stood there from at least 1430. If you are interested in architectural styles and the long history of a church site, this offers a tangible point of interest, without reducing the present-day church to its architecture alone.

Klæbu Bygdemuseum is in Teigen, by Lake Selbusjøen in Klæbu. The museum includes a farmstead with seven buildings, most of them built around 1850. The buildings provide a clear focus for exploring local architectural history. Unlike the individual octagonal church, the focus here is an ensemble whose several buildings can be viewed together.

Tanem øvre and Nideng Søndre offer further insights into farm history. Tanem øvre has a large, intact, enclosed farmstead arranged in a square. Nideng Søndre is also an enclosed square and is a rare, well-preserved farmstead from the early 19th century. Many original building elements have survived, particularly in the dwelling house. The two farms therefore offer different tangible points of interest for travellers interested in cultural history: the enclosed square layout and the preservation of original building fabric.

The cultural environment in Klæbu is of national importance and has a rich institutional history. It spans from the founding of Klæbu seminar in 1839 to the closure of Hallsetheimen in 1991. The cultural environment also includes the connection between the two oldest power stations in the Nidelv watercourse and the associated workers’ housing. These historical links add institutional and industrial perspectives to the architectural ensembles.

Circular trails, hikes and winter ski trails

Sentrumsrunden is a six-kilometre circular trail through the centre of Klæbu. You can join the trail at a suitable point. It runs through the Hallsetområdet area and descends through Håggåbekkdalen. With its set circular route and the option of joining at a suitable point, this trail works well as a standalone activity. You can take its six-kilometre length into account when planning your day.

A range of landscapes are available for hiking: you can explore Vassfjellet, walk along the Nidelva or head into the forests around Gjenvollhytta. If you like to choose your excursions by landscape type, you can pick between mountains, river and forest. From Klæbu, you can also reach Kråkfjellet in Brungmarka, the highest peak in Trondheim. Each destination offers a different focus, without needing to combine them into a single route.

Klæbu also has a specific option for winter sports: there are kilometres of cross-country ski trails in both Vassfjellet and the area around Gjenvollhytta. Whether ski trails are among your planned activities may therefore be a key factor when choosing your travel dates and accommodation.

Activities with different focuses

The main attraction at Klæbu Aktivitetspark is a large concrete skatepark. The park has a smooth, skate-friendly surface, and the skatepark can be used with wheeled equipment. This makes the skatepark a distinct focus for physical activity alongside the hiking and winter sports options. Klæbu is also home to Moodden friluftspark. At Klæbu’s bathing spots, you can swim safely in the Nidelva.

When searching for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding which of these interests you want your trip to focus on: cultural history, trails and hiking destinations, ski trails, or activities at the skatepark and river. Klæbu offers a range of different themes, without requiring you to limit your trip to just one kind of experience.

If you would like to explore other destinations, you can also find Osen, Melhus and Oppdal here.
