Vinjeøra: Viking Finds and Local History

Vinjeøra combines a rich local history with plenty of opportunities to spend time by the water and explore the surrounding area. A burial ground with an extraordinary double-boat burial, an octagonal wooden church and the old trading post Bua take visitors through very different periods. Finstedet by the Fjelna River offers a different experience, while nearby Storlisetra is a destination for a hike. Church and archaeological history

Vinje Church was built in 1820 and is located in Vinjeøra. It is an octagonal wooden church and is automatically listed in the Riksantikvaren’s register of protected heritage sites. Its year of construction and architectural style give local history a clear architectural reference point. The burial ground at Skeiet reveals a very different period; it was used from approximately 550 to 950 AD.

In a double-boat burial discovered there, a woman from the 8th century was laid in a small boat with a cow’s head and two large bronze oval brooches. A man from the 7th century was buried in the same grave with a boat, sword and spear. No such double-boat burial had previously been discovered in Norway. The church and burial ground thus represent distinctly different historical periods: the church built in 1820 and an archaeological context spanning several centuries.

Trading post, bakery and local traditions

The old trading post Bua in Vinjeøra dates from 1895. The well-preserved, distinctive general store building can be opened on request and is open to everyone. Vinjeøra also has an intact bakery dating from the 1870s, with a restored historic oven; baking takes place there several times a year.

Recurring events are also part of the local calendar: the Vinje Heritage Association holds Bakardaga annually and Buadag every summer. If you are planning to travel specifically for one of these events, check the date in advance. This lets you plan a trip focused on the historic sites and local traditions without assuming that an event takes place on a fixed day.

Fjelna, the fjord and trails in the surrounding area

Finstedet is a swimming spot on the Fjelna River near Vinjeøra. Vinjeøra Marina offers a different connection to the water: this small marina is at the innermost end of the Vinjefjord and has a few guest berths. If you are planning to moor there, it is a good idea to check current availability.

The Storlisetra tourist cabin is easy to reach from Vinjeøra and is about a 40-minute walk away. Most of the route to the cabin follows a forest track. Storlisetra is open year-round; check the current operator information before your visit. If you start the Fjordruta at Kristiansund Airport, Storlisetra is the route’s eighth cabin. The Fjordruta has SignaTur status. The ascent from Vinjeøra to the treeless mountain terrain takes about 40 minutes.

The archaeological remains and wooden church offer a different experience from time at the swimming spot, a hike to Storlisetra or the seasonal events. These differences can help you shape your trip around the experiences that interest you most.
