Mausund: Coastal History and Island Nature
Accommodation in Mausund
Mausund combines a strong maritime culture with coastal history, island trails and nature experiences. The village consists of Måøya, Gårdsøya, Aursøyan and Geitøya, which are connected by bridges and roads. When choosing where to stay, you might consider whether you are particularly interested in the history of the island community, the landscape or local events. Mausund is also a natural gateway to the protected Froan landscape in the surrounding area.
Getting here and island connections
From the Dyrøy ferry terminal on Frøya, you can reach Mausund by ferry and express boat on routes 825/820. Route 825, operated by Torghatten, connects Frøya with Mausundvær, Bogøyvær and Sula. If you would like to combine your trip with visits to other islands, a five-hour island-hopping tour from Sistranda or Dyrøya offers one option: it visits Sula and Bogøyvær and, if time allows, Mausundvær.
Coastal history and culture on Mausund
At the Trøndelag Coastal History Museum, you can learn about life on land and at sea in the past. The museum preserves and shares the region’s coastal history from the 19th century to the 1970s. Its maritime past sits alongside Mausund’s character today as a lively community with a strong coastal culture.
The historical open-air play “Oda fra Havet” tells a story of a special connection to the island community. It is about the real-life fisherwoman Oda Markusen and is based on author Vidar Oskarson’s trilogy about the island community. The play is performed in Mausund every two years. The annual “Ut i havet” festival is a separate event, offering a range of cultural activities as well as its own fishing competition.
Island trails, views and wildlife
The “Turtriangelen på Mausundvær” circular trail links three destinations across three islands. The route is shaped by hills and open landscapes, with good views along the way. For a different kind of nature observation, look out for the birdlife along the route on Mausundvær, including herring gulls, European shags, white-tailed eagles, cormorants, ptarmigans and geese.
The protected Froan landscape is nearby and is one of the most species-rich natural areas along the coast. It is home to white-tailed eagles, seals and a rich variety of birdlife. Mausundgløtt runs white-tailed eagle safaris in the surrounding area. You can choose between a circular trail through the open island landscape and an activity focused on white-tailed eagles.
Boat trips and places to eat
Wold Kysttransport offers trips on two fast passenger boats. These allow you to experience old fishing villages, coastal culture and nature up close; Mausund is one of the destinations listed. For a meal on Mausund, Havna Kafe serves dishes including halibut, fiskeball, whale specialties and pizza. Matrosen is a pub and restaurant on Aursøya in Mausund. It has a large outdoor area and hosts events throughout the year.
