Innvik
Accommodation in Innvik
Fjord, green slopes, fruit farms and mountains rising above the water: Innvik combines striking scenery with distinctive traces of culture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment here, you can first consider whether you mainly want to explore the fjord landscape or learn about historic places and local collections. Innvik offers tangible points of interest for both.
Innvik Church is an octagonal wooden church in the village. It was completed in 1822 and consecrated in 1824; it had already been used for two years before its consecration. The church contains an altarpiece from 1900 depicting “The Baptism of Jesus”. A medieval soapstone cross shaped like a Celtic sun wheel also stands by the church. The architecture, subject of the painting and cross offer different ways to explore the local history of the church.
Another historical trace leads to Hilde. Innvik’s first parish church probably stood there; it was a medieval stave church of the Møre type. The nave of Hilde’s medieval church was 22 metres long and 7 metres wide. These dimensions give a concrete sense of the size of the former nave. The presumed location of the first parish church and the later Innvik Church should be considered as separate historical details.
The cultural history of everyday life is also present in Innvik. Liatunet is an open-air and farm museum with seven furnished buildings. Items on display there include horse harnesses and tools and machinery used in grain production. Gamle Innvik Ullvarefabrikk offers a different focus: the building preserves original textile-production machinery. It also has rooms for exhibitions, events and creative gatherings. The factory is one of the largest wooden buildings in Europe. Together, these places show different aspects of local history—from farming and grain processing to textile production.
The Kulturløypa i Innvik offers a way to combine culture with exercise. The easy circular route is about 3.2 kilometres long. Stops along the route include Innvik Church and the old church site at Hilde. The approximate distance and easy rating can help you fit the walk into your day’s plans. If you are particularly interested in churches and historic places, you can use the two stops to guide your choice.
Choosing Innvik as a holiday destination
You can reach Innvik by car via National Road 60 between Olden and Utvikfjellet. Buses also run to Innvik, with connections to Stryn, Nordfjordeid and the rest of the region. These transport options are a useful factor to consider when deciding how you would like to get around during your stay.
Innvik also offers different types of accommodation. Innvik Fjordhotel is located by the water and has a restaurant and a terrace overlooking the fjord. Innvik Fjordcamp offers cabins and pitches for tents, motorhomes and caravans. If you are specifically looking for a holiday apartment, you can use Innvik’s scenery, cultural sites and your preferred way of exploring the area as criteria when choosing where to stay.
Innvik is therefore a good base for different kinds of holidays: the landscape shapes the village, while the churches, museum and former woollen mill offer specific cultural themes. You can focus your stay more on scenic experiences or on the history and culture of the village, without having to choose just one side.
