Hafslo lies by Hafslovatnet between Sogndal and Gaupne. The area can be explored through a wide range of experiences: a bird sanctuary with several bodies of water, trout fishing, a historic wooden church and the abandoned farmstead of Modvo. Sogn Skisenter is also a specific place to visit. When choosing a holiday rental, it may therefore be important to consider whether you associate Hafslo primarily with nature, culture, fishing or skiing.

Hafslovatnet and the bird sanctuary

The Hafslovatnet Bird Sanctuary was established in 1991 to protect its diverse birdlife. It covers the westernmost part of Hafslovatnet, as well as Straumavatnet, Tverbergvatnet and a few metres of shoreline. Several bodies of water are therefore included in the protected area; Hafslovatnet is not the only named body of water within it. To reach the area, take the FV55 to Hafslo, then drive through the centre towards Veitastrond. This direction helps you find your way to the natural area.

Fishing at Hafslovatnet

Fishing is permitted in the Hafslovatnet Bird Sanctuary with a fishing licence for Hafslovatnet. The lake is particularly noted in Hafslo for trout fishing, and recreational anglers come from all over Norway to fish there. One condition is important for planning your trip: you need a fishing licence for Hafslovatnet to fish in the protected area. Nature experiences and a fishing holiday can therefore be considered as a focus for your stay in their own right, distinct from the area's cultural attractions.

Hafslo kyrkje: wooden architecture and stained-glass window

Hafslo kyrkje stands on the northern shore of Hafslovatnet. The wooden long church has 300 seats and was consecrated on 4 December 1878. A distinctive feature inside is the stained-glass window on the eastern wall: dating from 1878, it depicts Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Details of the church's design, size and consecration give a specific impression of the building; the window adds its own motif. Anyone interested in church architecture and imagery will find a clearly defined cultural attraction here in Hafslo.

Modvo and traces of a former farmstead

Modvo is a 1,500-year-old abandoned farmstead and a cultural heritage site in Hafslo. Old field boundaries and fields are still visible on the former farm site. Modvo can thus be described not only by its age but also by traces of its former use. To get there, leave the Rv. 55 at Heggmyrane, follow Krekavegen and then take a tractor track. The cultural heritage site is signposted from the road. Marked posts bearing the letters A to F and a map set up on site help visitors explore the area.

Skiing and choosing where to stay

Sogn Skisenter welcomes families to its ski area and ski play area. This adds a specifically family-oriented skiing attraction to the area's nature, fishing and culture. These interests offer different priorities: someone interested in the bird sanctuary or trout fishing will view Hafslo differently from someone drawn to the wooden church, Modvo or the ski centre.

Hafslo is located by Hafslovatnet between Sogndal and Gaupne. The drive from Sogndal to Hafslo via the FV55 is listed as taking 15 minutes. This information can help you consider Hafslo as a destination in its own right when looking for a holiday rental, and match it to the experiences you want. Whether nature, culture, fishing or skiing is the deciding factor can be determined by looking at what the area specifically offers.
