The Vindafjord Museum is dedicated to local craft and economic history, particularly the traditions of shipbuilding. It is set up as a rural farmstead and includes the municipality’s last telegraph station. This brings together two distinct aspects of the region’s past in one place: work and the economy, as well as the history of communication. Anyone interested in everyday life and craft history will find a tangible introduction to Vindafjord’s culture here.

Nerheimstunet also offers a glimpse into the past. The farmstead at Store Nerheim was probably built around 1660, and its buildings have been restored. Nerheimstunet is also associated with a pre-Christian pagan temple. A historic meeting place was probably located there as well.

The Ørevikvegen is another trace of history. It was part of the old main road between Haugesund and Sauda and was restored as a cultural heritage site in the 1990s. In Bjoa, the cultural trail passes four rock art sites, two fields with cup marks in the rock and five burial mounds. The history of a former transport route and tangible archaeological evidence thus offer different aspects of the region’s cultural heritage.

Trails and outdoor activities

Olalia is a popular hiking area in winter, summer and autumn. It has a floodlit trail between Oppheim and Fjellstøl that is about 5 kilometres long. Marked trails and ski tracks also lead from Olalia to the hiking destinations Hest, Vådli and Staurskar. The floodlit trail and the routes to these destinations offer different options for planning your day; you can also take the trail’s approximate length into account.

Vadhytta can be reached from Bjoa and Ølensvåg via gravel roads. The route from Bjoa to the cabin is suitable for bicycles, prams and wheelchairs. Vadhytta also has a mini-library run by Vindafjord Library. The cabin is therefore not only a hiking destination, but also offers a small selection of reading material.

At Opsalsfossen, above the centre of Vikedal, the path leads from the car park over a bridge to an island and onward to fish ladders built around the turn of the century. The waterfall is easy to reach along the road above the centre. The sequence of a walk, bridge, island and fish ladders makes this a distinct excursion destination, where a built feature is as much in focus as the scenery.

Aktivitetsparken is located by the water in the centre of Ølen. All activities there take place outdoors. A booking is required for padel tennis, beach volleyball and boules. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, booking is therefore part of the preparation. The three sports offer different experiences, but all take place in this park.

Islands and further discoveries

The Romsaøyene are home to old buildings and house ruins. The Haukelandstunet farmstead includes a dwelling house, a barn and a smokehouse. In 2000, the nature reserve on the eastern part of Store-Romsa was designated as a protected area. The island group is also a popular destination for boaters, and there are opportunities for recreational fishing around the islands. Historic buildings, nature conservation and activities on the water are all different reasons to explore the Romsaøyene.

About an hour’s drive east of Vindafjord lie Åkrafjorden and the gateway to Hardanger. There are good opportunities for hiking and overnight stays there. If you want to broaden your trip, you can consider these destinations as an additional focus alongside the experiences in Vindafjord.
