Strand: Preikestolen, Island Loop and Culture
Accommodation in Beach
Strand combines a striking cliff with island activities, hikes and cultural attractions. Preikestolen is located in the municipality of Strand and rises to a height of 604 metres. The activities on Jørpelandsholmen, the history of Solbakk and the rose garden at Rosehagen also give a trip a range of different focuses.
Hiking at Preikestolen
The trail to Preikestolen passes through marshland and forests and includes stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas. The hike is 8 kilometres long in total, and the round trip is estimated to take about four hours. This approximate duration provides a guide for planning your day; conditions on the trail may vary. The car park at Preikestolen is open 24 hours a day, all year round. As operating conditions may change, check the latest information before you arrive.
Activities on Jørpelandsholmen
Jørpelandsholmen is well equipped for visits by boat, kayak or small craft. The island has a 1.7-kilometre loop trail designed to be accessible, as well as a 12-hole disc golf course, a large playground and swimming spots. A range of activities are available: you can include the loop trail in your plans or combine your visit with disc golf, games and swimming. The options range from a walk to activities on the water.
Jørpeland and Jørpelandsvågen
Jørpelandsvågen has a motorhome parking area with 26 spaces and a guest harbour with 30 berths. The hike to Jørpelandsfossen also starts there and follows the river. It is advisable to check local conditions before setting out. Fjord Expedition’s main base in Jørpeland offers guided kayak tours; check current availability when planning your trip. If you need outdoor equipment, Frilager pick-up points are available in Tau and Jørpeland.
Culture, gardens and history
Villa Rosehagen is a vibrant cultural venue offering food and drink, local history and cultural events. Rosehagen is a historic wooden villa with a rose garden: its rose collection dates back to the 13th century and is considered the largest in the Nordic region. Flor & Fjære also combines a visit with a boat trip to the island of Sør-Hidle. The garden was developed over three generations.
Jørpeland is also the venue for the annual Strandadagene, which features cultural events and a range of activities for visitors of all ages. The programme may vary from year to year, so check the latest event dates. Near Solbakk is a prehistoric rock carving site dating to around 500 BC. The carvings include almost 30 depictions of ships and eight sun figures. Another work of art, Solspeilet on Klungholmen, is surrounded by twelve standing stones. Mølleparken, meanwhile, was created during the mill’s operation around the director’s residence, which was associated with Tou Brug.
Which experiences do you want to shape your trip?
When choosing a holiday apartment in Strand, you can first decide which experiences you want to focus on: the longer hike to Preikestolen, the various activities on Jørpelandsholmen, a guided kayak tour, or cultural and historical sites. These options differ in type and scope. Choose the location of your accommodation based on the places you want to visit, and plan your journeys accordingly.
