Røyneberg: Cycling and History
Accommodation in Røyneberg
Røyneberg can be explored through two specific themes: the “Rundt Sola, Grannes og Røyneberg” circular route and Myklaberget with its hillfort. You can use these to guide your choice of holiday apartment: are cycling and local history your main interests, or would you also like to include coastal and cultural activities in the wider destination of Sola? This lets you consider the kind of excursions you want when choosing where to stay.
A circular route with clear details
The circular route is 21.8 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of 251 metres. It is classified as an easy cycling tour, and is listed as open year-round. The distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating provide different points of reference: the distance indicates the length of the route, while the elevation gain describes the total ascent. Check current conditions before setting out, as the weather and trail conditions can change.
The route goes to Sørnesvågen. There you will find Ormen Lange and Viking figures carved from old tree trunks; there is also a football pitch at Ormen Lange. In good weather, Ormen Lange is a swimming spot on the west side of the hiking area at Ytraberget. For the detour to Ytraberget, the circular route recommends leaving your bicycle in Sørnesvågen and continuing a short distance on foot. After returning to your bicycle, the route follows part of the old Tjodvegen to Grannessletta. This combines cycling, named waypoints and a short stretch on foot, without requiring you to choose another route.
Myklaberget and the history of Sola
Myklaberget is located in Røyneberg and is one of three registered hillforts in Sola. The hillforts date from the Migration Period; three are known at the municipal level, at Ytraberget, Myklaberget and Bjerget. Myklaberget is therefore a specific place to focus on for a historical look at Røyneberg, while the three sites mentioned are part of the wider context of the municipality of Sola.
Ytraberget is also linked to a historical account: according to Snorre, those who lost the Battle of Hafrsfjord fled via this place. This adds another historical reference to a stop on the route and distinguishes it from Myklaberget, which is located directly in Røyneberg.
Sola: Coast, Trails and More History
The wider destination of Sola offers other travel interests in addition to cycling and cultural heritage. Solastranden is a long sandy beach next to Stavanger Airport. Behind the dunes, Sola Activity Center rents out surfing equipment and offers courses for beginner and advanced surfers. The blue-marked Kyststien runs for about five kilometres from Solastranden to Vigdel, via the harbour at Ølberg. With its different route, it complements the 21.8-kilometre circular route near Røyneberg with a shorter option in the wider Sola area.
Another option in Sola is the Solabu day-trip cabin, which is open to everyone year-round. From the car park, a gravel path about one kilometre long leads to the cabin; it is accessible by pushchair or wheelchair. This information can help with planning if a short walk and access to the cabin are important.
Cultural history also shapes the wider destination of Sola. The medieval Sola Ruinkyrkje was built in the 12th century. Two large stone crosses stand in the old cemetery at Tjora and are among the earliest material traces of the Christianisation of Norway. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh the local focus on the cycling route and hillfort against other coastal, activity and cultural themes in Sola.
