Sokndal: Rock Art, History and Active Discoveries

Rock formations and traces of the past
The rock art site near Haneberg features at least two ships and several cup marks. The carvings date from the Bronze Age, between 1800 and 500 BC. Another geological feature is Nesvåghålo: the rock formation, known as potholes, was created by flowing water beneath a melting glacier. Ruggesteinen also has a special place in the region’s geological history; in 1923, the stone became Norway’s first geological site to receive protected status.
Helleren comprises two houses dating from the late 18th or early 19th century and is considered an ancient settlement site. The houses are located on Riksvei 44 between Egersund and Flekkefjord, are visible from the road and can be reached via a turn-off from Fv. 44 at the bottom of the valley. The Blåfjell mines, meanwhile, were in operation from 1863 to 1876. Those interested in the area’s history will find a range of points of interest here, from early settlement to mining.
Hiking, cycling and water activities
The marked Nordsjøløypa trail runs between Jøssingfjord and Sogndalstrand. Another marked hiking trail on Oddsfjellet leads to the grave of the Viking Orvar Odd; the route also offers views of the North Sea. The trail through Blåfjelldalen is 3.6 km long and follows a gravel walking and cycling path. This gives you a choice of different routes and destinations when planning your outings, without requiring you to follow a particular route.
There are also various ways to enjoy the water: you can kayak along the Sokna to Sogndalstrand, with equipment available to rent or borrow. Sogndalstrand Havrafting & Friluft offers sea kayaking and fishing trips at various locations in Sokndal. For cyclists, the former railway line from Blåfjell to Rekefjord is also of interest; it is now used as a walking and cycling path. The roads in Sokndal have little traffic and are well suited to cycling; several locations are suitable for mountain biking or have trails built for it.
Culture and activities for a range of interests
Sogndalstrand was known as a trading post from 1660 and was officially granted the rights of a ladested in 1798. The Sogndalstrand Museum features exhibitions on local history and maritime culture. The collection at the Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum includes the Rosslandsguden: the approximately 60 cm tall figure was carved from locally sourced rock, comes from Rossland in Sokndal and is now on display there. Sokndal Church was built in 1803 in the Louis XVI style.
The Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum also offers indoor climbing, including bouldering and top-rope climbing. Those interested in motorsports can drive on a race track and an off-road course at Motorcenter Norway in Kroheia. The centre can be booked for races, training, motorsport enthusiast gatherings, team-building and other events. Velferden hosts exhibitions, concerts, courses and seminars for the public.
