Hommersåk: Fjord, Trails and History

At the innermost end of the Riskafjord, Hommersåk combines fjord scenery with a sheltered bathing spot, walking trails and places of local history. The Riskafjord runs about three kilometres southeast from the mouth of the Gandsfjord, between the mainland and the island of Uskjo (Usken). Breivik is a sheltered saltwater bathing spot in Hommersåk. Rocks and a sandy beach are part of its character. Ulsneset friområde, at the outer end of Hommersåkvågen, offers a different nature experience: walking trails there pass through protected woodland and open areas.

The circular route in Ulsneset friområde is 735 metres long and has a maximum gradient of 1:6. There are two starting points at car parks along Breivikveien. Its length and gradient give you specific information to help plan your walk. You can treat the loop as a short walk in its own right, while the Hommersåkruta offers a longer route.

Routes and views

The Hommersåkruta is an 8-kilometre green route. It starts at Stemmen in the centre of Hommersåk and follows the path along Frøylandsvatnet on the way to Eskemyr. The surface is a mix of gravel and asphalt. Take the full route length into account when planning your day; the route offers a different kind of walk, following the lake. Hommersåk offers another focus for an outing: a trip to Lifjell. The tour offers magnificent views of the Gandsfjord, the North Sea, Nord-Jæren, Riska and Ryfylke. To reach Lifjell, you can take the scheduled boat from Fiskepirterminalen in Stavanger to Hommersåk. Alternatively, take bus 21 from Sandnes bus station to Hommersåk kai. The departure points and means of transport differ, so choose the option that suits your starting point. MS Riskafjord II is also based in its home port of Hommersåk. Churches and traces of the area

Hommersåk has two churches with different construction dates and characteristics. Riska gamle kirke is a wooden church built in 1877. Riska kirke was inaugurated in 1999 and is a modern, functional parish church with plenty of activity throughout the week. Distinctive architectural traces of the area’s history can also be found beyond the churches. On the slope behind Øykhagen is a small settlement of cabins dating from the interwar period, including a Jær-style cabin. The cabin settlement and boathouses offer a different focus from the bathing spot and routes, appealing to travellers who want to discover local architecture and history as well as the landscape.
