On Røvær, the history of island life meets insights into modern aquaculture. There are also hiking trails, archaeological remains and places by the water. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests, whether you want to explore historical traces, learn more about fish farming or spend time outdoors.

Hiltahuset and the Island’s History

Hiltahuset is the oldest house on Røvær and is home to a museum. Its construction suggests that it was built in the 1820s; originally, it was mainly used as a farmhouse. The house’s history is also reflected in how it was used over time: in the 1880s, one of the living rooms was converted into a classroom. Hiltahuset was passed down from mother to daughter over several generations.

The museum’s many objects offer insights into the island’s history and the living conditions of its residents. One room is dedicated to the Røvær tragedy of 1899. Visitors interested in everyday life in the past will find different points of interest here—from the farmhouse and classroom to the objects on display.

The past is also part of the landscape beyond the house. Røvær’s cultural landscape is protected under the Cultural Heritage Act and includes archaeological remains from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. In Grønavikjo are the remains of a prehistoric fishing village with 14 house foundations; the oldest date from the Late Iron Age. There are also Viking graves in Grønasvika.

Aquaculture and Life by the Water

The Røvær Aquaculture Centre combines an interactive exhibition with accessible insights into aquaculture, history, the environment and natural conditions. The centre is a short walk from the quay and is easily accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. An excursion to the fish farms lasts about 45 minutes; visitors can borrow dry suits, shoes and life jackets.

A guided tour from Røvær takes visitors to the salmon cages operated by Røvær Fjordbruk. Topics include feeding, equipment, technology and production. These topics offer different ways to explore fish farming: you may be as interested in the practical equipment as in the production processes. Two aquariums in the publicly accessible outdoor area at Tranhuset offer another glimpse of marine life, with fish, crabs and other sea creatures on display.

The Røvær Canal is also part of the history of island life. It was built around the middle of the 19th century to improve harbour conditions for fishermen and has been repaired several times. To this day, it remains an important lifeline for residents and visitors.

Exploring the Outdoors

With a free map from the local shop, you can explore various hiking trails in the western part of Røvær. Bråvarden is the island’s highest point; on clear days, it offers wide-ranging views. The Bridge of Love is within walking distance. You can include the trails and destinations in your stay according to your own interests, without every experience needing to involve the same kind of outing.

Grønasvika is a place to swim and sunbathe. If you would rather focus on the island’s history, you can visit the archaeological remains in Grønavikjo or the Viking graves in Grønasvika. The similar place names refer to different locations and remains.

A playground with benches and tables is located next to the school and kindergarten. For a culinary discovery, Røvær Seahouse serves the traditional Norwegian dish “komle.” Skjoldbladbua is a gift shop selling handmade locally produced items.
