Vitengarden: Landscape and Rural History

Vitengarden is a combined museum and science centre about the rural history of the Jæren region. In the “Technology and Landscape” exhibition, you can explore how the Jæren landscape has changed. You can also try out technologies that have been used to bring about these changes. This means the focus is not only on the results of landscape change, but also on the technology that played a part in it.

Your visit also offers an engaging look at animals typical of a farm in Jæren: at Vitengarden, you can see cows, chickens, geese, pigs and sheep. The different animals complement the themes of landscape and agriculture with concrete examples. Vitengarden is about 1.5 km from Nærbø station on foot or by bicycle.

Hiking in Hanabergsmarka

Hanabergsmarka is a cultural and outdoor recreation area with good hiking opportunities in all weather and throughout the year. A circular hike through the area is 2.5 km long: it leads from Vitengarden through the woods over Hanaberget and back to Vitengarden. Orienteering markers with QR codes are located throughout the area. You can download orienteering maps or get them at the Vitengarden reception.

Hanaberget offers a different perspective. The gravel path along Kviamyra leads to the highest point in the area, which is 51 m high. From there, the view stretches west across the sea and the modern agricultural landscape of Låg-Jæren, Nærbø and Vitengarden. If you enjoy taking in the surroundings along the way, you’ll find a specific viewpoint to aim for here.

Trails and Activities at Dalabekken

The trail along Dalabekken is one of the short hikes listed by the Norwegian Trekking Association. Starting from Nærbøparken, it is marked in both directions with red T markers. Another way to spend time outdoors is at the large playground by Dalabekken in Nærbø. There is also a Frisbee golf course along the stream. This gives you several activities to choose from during your stay: a marked hike, play or Frisbee golf.

Nærbøparken is a green park and a meeting place in the centre of Nærbø. Together with the attractions at Dalabekken, it offers a different focus for an outing than the circular hike through Hanabergsmarka: here, the park, playground and Frisbee golf take centre stage; there, the trail through the woods and up to Hanaberget.

Culture and Local Ingredients

The SPOR exhibition is located in the basement of the Jærhuset building at Hå gamle prestegard. It is based on traces of a 9,000-year-old Stone Age settlement discovered during foundation work. Those interested in early settlement history will find a unique way to explore the region’s past there. Nearby, the café at Hå gamle prestegard serves homemade food made with local ingredients.

Audamotland farm may also be of interest to visitors interested in culture. It is open by appointment and is often used for teaching. Bear this opening requirement in mind if you are considering including the farm in your plans.
