Rømskog combines cultural sites with marked hiking trails and waters where various activities are possible. When planning your holiday, you can therefore focus on different things: local history, getting active on the trails, or spending time by the water. Getting there is also part of choosing a location: public transport to Rømskog is very limited, and travelling by car is recommended.

Cultural history at Kurøen and Haukenestårnet

Kurøen is both an open-air museum and a cultural centre. The history of the farm dates back to 1599; Kurøen was also declared the millennium site of the former municipality of Rømskog. This makes it a notable destination for travellers who want to include culture and history in their trip. The farm offers a different way to explore local history from the trails and waters that take centre stage elsewhere in Rømskog.

Another distinctive landmark is Haukenestårnet in Rømskog: it is one of only two surviving wooden fire lookout towers in Norway. The cabin at Haukenestårnet is located on Haukenesfjellet along Grensesømmen, the route from Halden to Treriksrøysa. This means you can include the site in your plans both for its historic tower and its named route, without implying any specific walking distance or accessibility.

Marked trails with different starting points

The Tukuelva cultural trail is a 5 km marked route along a river, close to the centre of Rømskog. Its stated length gives you a concrete point of reference for planning your day, but does not indicate how long it takes to walk. The marked 1814 trail is also close to the centre and has some facilities. If you want to combine culture and activity, you can include these trails as separate options in your travel plans.

There are more marked hiking trails at Haukenesfjellet and Slavasshøgda. Notable features in this area include a DNT cabin, Østfold’s highest point and an old fire lookout tower. Strandene Turvei is also a marked hiking trail. Abortjern has a hiking area and a bathing spot. These names offer different starting points if you want to focus on hiking, a bathing spot or cultural destinations when choosing your holiday rental.

Waters and activities

At Rømsjøen and in the “Rømsjøen rundt” area, there are bathing spots, fishing opportunities and shelters. “Rømsjøen rundt” also has a marked cycling route around the lake. When planning, you can decide whether you want to cycle there, fish or visit a bathing spot. The marked circular route is a separate option and should not be confused with the hiking trails mentioned above.

Kurøen bygdetun also has bathing spots. There is also a jetty, canoe hire and sand volleyball courts. Vortungen is a recreation area with a body of water for fishing, swimming, ice skating and paddling. These activities differ considerably: if you are mainly planning to swim and enjoy water sports, you can weigh up these options against cultural sites or hiking trails when choosing a holiday rental. You’ll find another combination of a hiking area and a bathing spot at Abortjern.

Nature reserve and cabins

Hølvannet Nature Reserve is also a bird area, and trails lead into the area. If you want to include nature reserves and birdlife in your travel interests, this offers a different focus from the cultural sites or bathing spots. The trails lead into the area, but no specific route or duration is stated.

Langemåsahytta and Lukashytta are cabins serving refreshments; both have a hiking trail and a ski trail. Rømskog therefore also offers places where hiking and skiing are mentioned. To find a suitable holiday rental, it’s worth first weighing up the experiences you want against the travel options: public transport is very limited, and travelling by car is recommended.

If you’d like to explore other places at this destination level, you can also find Manstad, Spydeberg, Rakkestad and Askim.
