Rocky Landscape and Coastal Life at Saltholmen

Saltholmen is a popular local recreation area in Saltnes. Here, rocky outcrops meet a small sandy beach; there is also a bathing platform and a small boat harbour. The rocks feature potholes and glacial striations. These shaped hollows and lines make the rocky landscape a distinctive feature alongside the beach. Saltholmen is connected to the mainland and is located near Saltnes, in Råde Municipality, right on the border with Fredrikstad. This gives the area a specific coastal setting on the edge of two municipalities.

Fishermen’s Cabins of Special Significance

There are about ten fishermen’s cabins at Saltholmen, now used as summer houses. These distinctive cabins are a landmark along this stretch of the Østfold coast. The area also has designated cultural and historical status: in 1997, Saltholmen was declared a selected cultural heritage site by Råde Municipality.

Sandy Beaches and Bathing Spots, Each with Their Own Features

Rubingen has a sandy beach. There is a bathing platform with a diving board. The Kyststien coastal path passes by Rubingen beach, so you can take both the bathing spot and a section of the coastal path into account as separate interests when planning your trip. Ellingstranda also has a small sandy beach, facing west and complemented by rocky outcrops. Ellingstranda is a public recreation area. Behind the bathing spot, there is a grassy area for playing; the bathing spot also has an access ramp into the water. The Kyststien Begins in Saltnes

The Kyststien coastal path through Råde Municipality is about 32 km long in total. Its southern starting point is in Saltnes, on the municipal border with Fredrikstad. The path passes Rubingen beach. If you want to include the Kyststien in your plans, its total length is a useful guide: it describes the route through the municipality, not just the section by the beach. Saltholmen can be reached by car via Saltnes, where there is a large car park. This makes access to this coastal area different from planning around the route of the Kyststien.

A Chance to Get Active in Town

The skatepark in Saltnes was completed in 2024. It has several ramps and an asphalt surface, offering a different focus from the beach and coastal path.
