Fredrikstad reveals its history in different ways: in a bastion fortress, in the Old Town’s exhibitions and through the work of building traditional wooden boats. Fortress history in the Old Town
Kongsten Fort was built in 1685 as a bastion fortress and is considered one of Norway’s best-preserved bastion fortresses. A covered way, which is still intact, connects the fort to the main fortress. If you prefer to explore the history and grounds independently, you can use Kulturpunkt. This offers two ways to get to know the fortifications: through their architecture and through information about the site’s history.
The Fredrikstad Museum is also in the Old Town, in Tøihuset, and comprises three exhibitions. Bar 1567 presents Fredrikstad’s history in the form of a history bar. The Old Town Model Railway offers another way to see the city in miniature: it features trains, landscapes, buildings, people and animals at a scale of 1:87, including a miniature of the Old Town. Its precise scale and many details make it an experience in its own right, alongside a visit to the museum.
Wooden boats, art and personal stories
Isegran is a maritime centre for building and restoring wooden boats. The museum harbour has piers where traditional boats are moored. Tours led by a boatbuilder from Maritime Center Fredrikstad focus on Isegran’s maritime heritage. Anyone interested in craftsmanship and the history of boats will find a different way to explore the area’s history here than at the fortifications or exhibitions.
Two museums offer further insights into individual lives: Roald Amundsen’s birthplace is now a museum, with period furniture and mementos from his expeditions. Hans Nielsen Hauge's Minde is a protected cultural heritage site with a museum and a visitor centre comprising two connected buildings. The Hans Nielsen Hauge experience includes a guided tour of his childhood home and the exhibition at the visitor centre, followed by a visit to the field where he had his famous spiritual experience. The tour lasts about 1.5 hours.
Discoveries at your own pace
For families, Bjørneløypa is a great place to visit: the children’s trail is about one kilometre long and features animal sculptures. Halfway along, there is a barbecue area with seating. If you are looking for a choice of activities, Aktivitetsbyen Gamle Fredrikstad offers outdoor adventure golf, pay-and-play golf, football golf and tennis. The activities vary considerably – from a trail with sculptures to a range of games and sports.
Art can also be discovered in a distinctive way: Holmen gategalleri offers a digital tour of Fredrikstad’s urban art scene. For a weather-proof activity, Kongstenbadet is just outside the Old Town. The facility includes an indoor area and an outdoor area open in summer, with a diving tower, children’s pool, waterslide and swimming pool.
Getting here and choosing a base for your stay
The fortified town is easily accessible by bus, car, bicycle and on foot. In addition, the city ferry runs year-round and is free of charge, providing access to the fortified town from the city centre, Cicignon and Gressvik.
