Ryfoss can be explored via hiking and cycling routes that offer different ways to discover the village itself and nearby destinations. Seasonal activities and regional cultural themes in the wider destination of Vang add to the experience. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether your stay will focus on hikes starting in Ryfoss, cycling, or additional excursions to destinations in Vang.

Hiking around Ryfoss

The barbecue shelter at Utsikten is a popular hiking destination in Ryfoss. The trail to Riddarberget also starts right in the village. On the way back, the Riddarberget trail follows the footpath between Høre and Ryfoss; there are information boards along the route. This means you can consider both the trail itself and the information along the way as two aspects of a hike.

Nearby, the Riddarberget fortification is located in Høreskogen. The narrow rocky gorge “Den løynde gangen” runs below it. The Høre/Ryfoss cultural trail is marked in blue. These destinations offer different options: a hike starting in Ryfoss, a route linked to Høre, or the rocky gorge by the fortification.

Cycling, waterfalls and seasonal activities

The Mjølkevegen cycling route follows Slettefjellvegen through Høre, Ryfoss and Syndin. Check the conditions for this route according to the season. Another nearby tour idea is the Slettefjellrunden, which recommends a break at Sputrefossen and a short walk to the waterfall. Parking is available near the barrier. From there, walk just under 900 metres along Slettefjellvegen and then about 150 metres on an unmarked path to the waterfall.

Sputrefossen, also called Givrisfossen on maps, is in the wider destination of Vang and is one of its larger attractions. It is distinctive because the water initially sprays upwards before falling like it does at other waterfalls. Combining a recommended break with the short detour makes the waterfall a destination in its own right when planning your tours; note that the final section follows an unmarked path.

In summer, you can take part in Stolpejakt in Ryfoss, an easy-to-access activity suitable for everyone. Check in advance whether it is available in the current season. In 2022, the sports club also got its own disc golf course in the wooded area behind YX Ryfoss. Check the latest information about the course before planning your visit. There is a bus stop in Ryfoss; it is best to check the timetable when planning your journey there and back.

Culture and nature in the wider destination of Vang

Vang adds historic churches and other natural attractions to the experiences around Ryfoss. Høre Stave Church in Vang dates from around 1179 and has medieval wood carvings of dragons and lions. Øye Stave Church was probably built in the 12th century. It has copies of medieval portals, probably also from the 12th century, with richly detailed animal ornamentation. The approximate dates reflect two different historical contexts within Vang.

Vang Church also preserves objects with their own history: a catechism board from 1620 was previously in Vang Stave Church. In 2012, the church also received back a collection of wooden figures, including apostles and Jesus, which were probably once in the former Vang Stave Church. At Riddarberget in Høreskogen, Vang, there are clearly visible remains of a hillfort. The six Bekkekvernene mills on the Leineåne in Vennis, Vang, form an exceptional historic building complex; they are a very short walk from a car park and rest area with toilets, and can also be seen from the road bridge over the Leineåne.

Another way to explore Vang is a small, family-friendly cycling loop above the village, at the foot of the Grindane massif. After just one kilometre, it offers views of Vang, Vangsmjøse and the mountains to the north. When choosing your accommodation, you can decide whether to focus your plans mainly on hiking and cycling in Ryfoss or also include cultural and nature destinations in the wider area of Vang.
