Lom combines impressive cultural sites with mountain nature and outdoor experiences. Fossbergom lies below the Lomseggen mountain ridge and is a national park village as well as a gateway to Jotunheimen, Breheimen and Reinheimen National Parks. This lets you take different interests into account when choosing your destination: historic architecture, exhibitions and hiking trails each shape a different side of a stay in Lom.

Stave Church and Mountain Museum

Lom Stave Church was built in the mid-12th century. It is open daily during the summer season, when guided tours are also offered daily without prior booking. If you are interested in architectural history, you can add a guided tour to your visit. The stave church is a distinctive cultural highlight in Lom, while the Norsk Fjellsenter focuses on mountain nature and outdoor life.

The Norsk Fjellsenter is a mountain museum and visitor centre for Jotunheimen, Breheimen and Reinheimen. Its exhibitions cover mountain nature, climate, cultural history and outdoor life. The centre also displays Norway’s largest collection of finds from glacier archaeology. These topics cater to a range of interests, from mountain landscapes to traces of human history. If you would rather focus on culture and knowledge of nature than on a hike during your trip, the museum offers a distinct point of interest.

Water, Trails and Outdoor Experiences

The Bøvra River flows through the centre of Fossbergom and over the Prestfossen waterfall. A zipline also crosses Prestfossen. This brings very different experiences together in the town centre: the river and waterfall on one hand, and a zipline ride on the other. Children can collect and take home stones from the daily replenished “Free pile” in front of Fossheim Steinsenter.

For a walk around the town centre, the Bergomsrunda is one option: this easy circular trail is about 2.5 kilometres long. If you would rather head for the mountain ridge, a well-marked hiking trail leads from the centre of Fossbergom to Lomseggen. Another route leads from the town centre via Tronodberget, continuing in the footsteps of Saint Olav along Olasvsråket. The Setervegen til fjells trail heads towards Skutlan and offers insights into nature and culture along the way. The trails differ in their destinations and themes, so choose according to whether you would like a walk around town, a hike to Lomseggen, or a focus on nature and cultural insights along the way.

Stones, Building Heritage and Local Cuisine

Fossheim Steinsenter is a geological museum as well as a jewellery gallery, shop and workshop in the centre of Lom. It displays Norwegian minerals from just over 700 sites. This combines an extensive mineral collection with other insights into jewellery and stonework. If you are travelling with children, you can combine a museum visit with collecting stones in front of the centre.

In the area around Lom, Lom Bygdamuseum illustrates historic building styles and domestic culture. It comprises 22 listed buildings showcasing architectural styles and interior and exterior features dating from 1613 to 1900. The museum’s Storstabburet dates from 1613 and houses a permanent exhibition about Lom’s distinctive irrigation and cultivation culture. For a trip focused on local history, this offers a different perspective from the stave church or the exhibitions on mountain nature.

The local cuisine adds another regional touch: Bakeriet i Lom uses locally produced flour from small suppliers. Fossbergom also has restaurants serving locally produced food. This means you can include local products in your travel plans alongside excursions and cultural experiences.

Lom’s official tourist information office is located in Nilsbue, a brown building at the roundabout in the middle of the town centre. More places to consider for your trip: Galdbygdi, Bøverdalen, Bøverkinnhalsen and Garmo.
