Dombås can be explored in different ways: as a town with rail connections in several directions, as a starting point for cycling loops and as the starting point for a 34-kilometre route across the Dovrefjell. There are also trails that pass Dombås Church, as well as a centrally located swimming pool. Which of these aspects shapes your stay may also influence your choice of holiday apartment in Dombås.

Church and pilgrimage trails in the centre

Dombås Church is a cruciform church built of natural stone in the centre of town. Its walls consist of triple-layer slate masonry, using slate from Jøndalen. This specific construction makes the material a distinctive feature of the church. Two named pilgrimage trails also pass the church: both the Valldalsleden and the Gudbrandsdalsleden run here. If you are interested in these trails, you can use the church as a landmark when finding your way around Dombås.

Arriving and travelling onward by train

Dombås station is on the Dovre Line. Trains run from there towards Trondheim, Åndalsnes, Oslo S and Hamar. At the station, passengers can also transfer to a train on the Rauma Line if they are continuing their journey on it or arriving on it. For planning your trip, several specifically named train directions and the transfer to the Rauma Line are therefore relevant. If you choose Dombås as your place to stay, rail connections may be an important part of your decision; which direction you take depends on your destination.

On foot or by bicycle across the Dovrefjell

The Nasjonalparkvegen across the Dovrefjell runs for 34 kilometres from Dombås to Hjerkinn. It can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. The route is described as a good gravel road with very little car traffic. The distance and the option of walking or cycling give you concrete points to consider when planning your day. The walking and cycling route between Dombås and Hjerkinn also passes near Dovre National Park, Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park and the Fokstumyra Nature Reserve.

The Grønbogrunda offers another way to explore the surrounding area on a tour. It passes through the Grønbogen forest to the mountain and the Grønsetra mountain-farm hamlet at an altitude of 1,030 metres. The route therefore combines a stretch through the forest with a destination at this elevation. When choosing between the tours, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on the longer route between Dombås and Hjerkinn or the described loop through Grønbogen.

Cycling loops and a swimming option in town

The Blæstergrende rundt cycling loop starts in Dombås and initially leads to the trail signs for Dombfossen. From there, it heads west along Vestsidevegen via Joramo, then follows the E136 back to Dombås. This sequence makes the loop easy to follow: from the starting point in town, via the named waypoints and roads, and back again. The Dovrebygda rundt cycling loop can also start in Dombås.

As a complement to excursions, the Dovre swimming pool is located in the centre of Dombås. It has a 25-metre competition pool with five lanes; the facility also includes showers, changing rooms and saunas. If you want to consider both tours and a swimming option in town when choosing where to stay, this provides another concrete factor in your choice of location.
