Nordfold Between Fjord History and Nature
Accommodation in Nordfold
Nordfold combines a long history along a fjord rich in fish with trails leading to lakes, shelters and viewpoints. Depending on the season, hiking and cycling, fishing or skiing take centre stage. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering which of these activities interests you most—and keeping the starting points mentioned for each in mind when choosing where to stay.
Hiking Trails with a Variety of Destinations
The Nordfold–Gammen–Einangen–Laksaa route starts in Nordfold, near the former dental centre. It is about 8 km one way and partly marked. Along the way, it leads to the Gammen cabin, where you can take a break and see Helldalsisen. Kvitbergan is a stop on the way to Gammen; the trail there starts in Kalvdalen. At Kvitbergan, there is a shelter with views over the Nordfoldfjord.
Another option is the Nordfold–Marhaug route. It is 5.5 km one way and partly marked. The trailhead is at the youth centre in Nordfold. From there, the trail heads towards Nordfoldvatnet and continues along a forest road to Marhaug. The two routes therefore offer different destinations and starting points; the distances given are for one-way journeys.
The route to Stokkvatnet can also be enjoyed in different ways depending on the season: in summer, it is suitable for hiking or cycling, while in winter you can travel it on skis. It starts at Laksåvatnet in Nordfold. Stokkvatnet is considered a good fishing lake. If you’re weighing up spending time on a trail against time by the water during your trip, you can think of these destinations as different focal points.
Lakes, Fishing and Winter Trails
Fishing is possible year-round in Nordfoldvannet, also known as Allmenningsvannet; nets can be borrowed if needed. From Nordfold, you can reach Allmenningsvatnet by road. There is a car park at the start of the floodlit ski trail. The forest road along the lake continues to Einangbukta; from there, you can carry on to Einangen and Erlingbu.
In winter, when conditions are suitable, ski tracks are groomed from Djupdalen and from the floodlit trail in Nordfold towards Vasshauet and Allmenningsvatnet or Einangsbukta, respectively. Nordfold also has a floodlit ski slope. Depending on snow conditions, it is groomed with a snow groomer or a snowmobile. If winter activities are your priority, these trails and the ski slope offer alternatives to the hiking and cycling routes mentioned above; grooming depends on suitable conditions and snow conditions.
Fjord History and Village Life
The Nordfoldfjord has been rich in fish since time immemorial, and Nordfolda was particularly known for herring fishing. The Nordfold church is another trace of the area’s history: this wooden church was built in 1976. At the harbour, Nordfold is well sheltered from bad weather, and boats have a safe place to moor there.
Nordfolddagan is a recurring village festival. Previous editions took place in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2024; one edition ran from 1 to 5 July 2026.
The area’s former importance for transport is also part of its history: until the Steigenveien road was completed, Nordfold was a transport hub for all road traffic heading south and had a ferry connection to Røsvik. Nordfold thus brings together landscapes, routes and a variety of historical themes—from fishing and transport to village life and outdoor activities.
