In Evenes, Sámi cultural history and traces of mining meet mountain hikes, lakes and a sandy beach. You can choose different focuses for your holiday: explore a cultural trail, take a challenging trip into the mountains or spend time by the water. Destinations range from historic sites to trails and outdoor areas.

Sámi culture and history

The Gállogieddi Sámi open-air museum offers insights into the cultural heritage, livelihood and religion of the Markasieddu communities. There, you can experience a Markasieddu farm. Traditional buildings include a gamme, a curved-pole lávvu, and residential, utility and storehouse buildings. An exhibition features Sámi handicrafts, known as duodji. The signposted Gállogieddi cultural trail is two kilometres long, passes Markasieddu cultural monuments and follows an old route into the mountains.

Márkomeannu takes place in Gállogieddi every year on the last weekend of July. The Sámi festival showcases artists, visual artists and cultural practitioners from across Sápmi. The Evenes Church offers another perspective on regional history: the first church in Ofoten was built in Evenes around 1250. The present church was built in 1800 as a cross-shaped church with a mansard roof, in the style of an old Danish manor house or the Biedermeier style. Its 13th-century baptismal font comes from the first church.

Mining trails and historic traces

In Bogen, a self-guided historic mining trail follows traces of the mining industry that shaped the area from 1905 to 1939. The Gruvedrift Bogen cultural trail is 2.5 kilometres long; nine signs describe the mining heritage. The trail is wheelchair-accessible as far as the penultimate point. Details about its length, stops and accessibility can help you distinguish these cultural trails from the more challenging mountain hikes.

Evenestangen also brings cultural history together with distinctive memorial sites. The war memorial cultural trail includes more than 30 cultural monuments. A signposted cultural trail there takes you past bunkers and remains of a German coastal battery from the Second World War, including gun and anti-aircraft positions, communications facilities, medical facilities and barracks. Evenestangen is also home to Steinkirka, a 5.5-metre-high granite sculpture. It was unveiled in 1995 as Evenes Municipality’s contribution to Artscape Nordland. The German battleship Tirpitz was stationed in Bogen Bay during three periods of the Second World War.

Hikes for different ability levels

For a mountain hike through the cultural landscape of Liland, Lilandsveten rises to 351 metres above sea level. From there, you can enjoy views of Liland, the archipelago, Bogen and the Ofotfjord. Niingen, by contrast, is a very challenging mountain hike over steep terrain. The trail starts at Røyrholla by Strandvatnet and is about 4.2 kilometres long to the summit; the walking time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Another option is the moderately difficult mountain hike to Nedre Skinnstakk at Nedre Skinnstakkvatn. The landscape there includes mountain lakes, marshes, grazing land and open mountain sections.

Strandvatnet and Evenesvika

Evenesvika in Evenestangen is a sandy beach and outdoor recreation area. At low tide, the water is shallow, making the bathing area suitable for small children. You can reach Evenesvika by car from the E10 near Harstad/Narvik Evenes Airport; there is a car park at the beach. A signposted hiking trail also leads from there to Haugbakken and Liakollen. At Strandvatnet, Vassbotn has a sandy beach, a large shelter, and a fire and barbecue area. Strandvatnet near Bogen is known as a good char fishing lake. These waterside destinations offer different experiences: the beach, time by the lake and fishing.

Evenes is centrally located between Harstad and Narvik, and the E10 runs through the municipality. Harstad/Narvik Evenes Airport is connected by bus to Harstad, Narvik, Vesterålen and Lofoten. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Evenes, let your plans for your holiday help you choose a starting point: Sámi culture and history, mountain hikes or time by the water.
