Grong: Culture, Cycling Routes and Tømmeråsfossen

Grong offers a range of ways to spend your holiday: at Kulturhuset Kuben, cultural and leisure activities come together, while cycling routes and trails lead you outdoors. There is also the historic Grong kirke and Tømmeråsfossen. Culture at Kulturhuset Kuben and Grong kirke

Kulturhuset Kuben is in the centre of Grong and brings together a concert hall, a cinema and a library, as well as a swimming pool. It also has rehearsal rooms for music and performing arts. This means that different cultural and leisure facilities are available in one place. The library is more than just part of the building: its desk also serves as reception and sells, among other things, tickets.

Kulturhuset is staffed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:00 to 16:00, and on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 20:00. These hours give you a practical guide for planning a visit. Grong kirke adds a distinct historical note. It stands on a medieval church site, is a timber-framed long church and was completed in 1876. It was consecrated on 14 November 1877. The church contains a 16th-century altarpiece beneath a 12th-century Calvary group; both were restored by the Riksantikvaren in 1976. A wooden processional crucifix probably dates from shortly after 1150. The different periods represented in the furnishings make the church particularly interesting for visitors interested in sacred art and history.

Cycling routes with different destinations

For a ride starting in the centre, one option is the signposted 9 km cycling route along FV 391 towards Lierne. Cycle route signs mark the way. Tømmeråsfossen is one of the sights listed along this route; there is also a detour from the route to the Tømmeråshøla bathing spot at Tømmeråsfossen on the Sanddøla. This lets you choose a route around a specific destination by the water.

Another option is the 16 km “Homorunden” cycling loop, which can also be started in the centre of Grong. A detour from the loop leads to the Rognsmoen nature and cultural trail. The signposted route towards Lierne and Homorunden therefore differ both in length and in the destinations mentioned for their detours. Another loop, “Skottleiken Rundt”, can also be started in the centre.

A walking trail also passes through the centre of Grong and follows the Sanddøla from there to Tømmeråsfossen. It then crosses the suspension bridge to Homo and continues along the old road towards Bjørgan. For those who prefer to explore on foot, the river, waterfall, bridge and historic road are useful landmarks along the way.

Tømmeråsfossen and the bathing spot

Tømmeråsfossen is about 2.5 km from the centre of Grong and has a drop of about 23 m. At the Tømmeråshøla bathing spot, you can swim in parts of the current and use a natural waterslide carved into the rock. This makes the waterfall a place to spend time by the water. The approximate distance and drop height help you place it in your own excursion plans, without confusing the route options with the bathing spot.

Getting here and choosing a holiday base

Grong railway station is a junction on the Nordland Line; bus services from there connect to Rørvik, Brønnøysund and Namsos.
