Sula combines trails through a distinctive cultural landscape with insights into maritime history and activities for active days out. At Mausavatnet, you can experience different trail surfaces; at Vassetvatnet and in Bakkevika, waterside experiences take centre stage. There are also winter ski trails, a model railway and activities for different age groups.

Trails through the landscape and winter ski trails

The trail to Vardane, the highest point on the island of Sula, is accessible all year round. If you are planning to visit the island in winter, you can enjoy the landscape in another way: groomed ski trails lead to the mountain huts Taustua and Rollonhytta. One of the trails leads to Taustua. When planning your trip, you can choose between the year-round trail to the highest point and the winter ski trails, without conflating the two activities.

At Mausavatnet, there is a paved walking and cycling path on one side and a gravel path on the other. The different surfaces may influence your choice of route for walks or bike rides. At Kjellingset, there is a relatively short and easy circular walk that follows a well-constructed path and a gravel path. If you enjoy spending time outdoors on Sula, you can choose between these two described routes, each with a different surface and character.

Activities for different interests

At Kraftverket Aktivitetspark, children, young people and adults can enjoy obstacle courses, slides, a bouldering wall and climbing frames across more than 800 m². The park brings together a range of ways to get active in one place. Devoldbanen is considered Norway’s largest model railway and is open every Saturday from 12:00 to 16:00. Sula therefore offers both active pursuits and a visit for those interested in model railways.

The recreational area at Vassetvatnet has swimming spots, shelters, a jungle playground, disc golf, a Tufte Park and picnic areas. There are options for exercise, play and taking a break. Bakkevika has a small sandy beach, a toilet, tables and barbecue facilities. If you are looking for a beach and a place to barbecue on an outing, these are the facilities listed there.

Cultural landscape and maritime history

Kjellingset is part of a larger cultural landscape with traces of settlement dating from the Migration Period to around 1780. This means you can explore the cultural landscape while also considering a relatively short, easy circular walk.

In Langevåg, the D/S Thorolf is based at Devoldfabrikken. The ship was built in 1910–1911 and is Scandinavia’s oldest surviving wooden steamship. A passenger boat connects Langevåg with Ålesund in about seven minutes. If you want to take this connection into account when choosing where to stay, Langevåg is a specific point of reference for planning your trip.
