Liabøen: Local History, Trails and Swimming Hall
Accommodation in Liabøen
Liabøen offers several ways to enjoy a stay: a walking tour explores the area’s history, trails offer different ways to get active, and the swimming hall adds a pool and sauna to the mix. You can also learn about life on a working farm and enjoy homemade food. Which of these experiences matters most to you may influence your choice of Liabøen as a holiday destination and your search for a holiday apartment.
Discover local history on a walking tour
The “Bli kjent på Liabø” walking tour starts and ends at Liatun, next to the E39 in Liabø, where parking is available. One of the stops is a statue of Johan Fredrik Øvrevik. The tour also offers insights into the history of Villa Viungen and the stories of Ingeborg Hauan, Øvrevik and other people and businesses that shaped the local community. The local history focuses not only on individual buildings, but also on the people and businesses behind them.
Villa Viungen was built in 1958 by Gustav and Ane Foss. The building was intended to house the telephone exchange, which had been moved from Vågland to Liabø. In those days, anyone who wanted to make a phone call had to go to Villa Viungen. This former function makes the villa a distinctive part of the history explored by the walking tour. Another sign of community life is the small red house next to the park in Liabø, where many gatherings and exhibitions take place.
Farm, views and trails
In Liabøen, Negarden is a working dairy farm. It offers a farm tour and a guided tour of Kurium with a meal. Kurium is in Negarden’s old barn and includes a farm museum, a small kitchen and a lounge. From there, you can look out over the cowshed and south towards the fjord. The museum, farm and meal combine insights into agriculture with a visit to the old barn.
If you’d like to take in the landscape, the Liabørunden trail information board offers a view over Liabø, with Tussan, Saksa and the Skålvikfjord in the background. Another option is the hike to Høgheia, which starts in Liabøen. Through the centre of Liabø, the “Liabø sentrum” route runs mostly along an asphalt path for pedestrians and cyclists, which is cleared of snow in winter. It also passes the health trail, which has outdoor exercise equipment. This gives you a choice for your day’s plans: either a hike starting in Liabøen or a route through Liabø sentrum that lets you get active outdoors.
Swimming and food in Liabø
The swimming hall in Liabø has a 25-metre training pool with a diving board and a 12.5-metre pool with an adjustable floor. There is also a sauna. During the municipality’s public swimming hours, the Heim Svømme- and Rettssvømming club takes on a host and lifeguard role. Your plans should therefore be based on the public swimming schedule; specific opening hours are not provided here.
For another local taste, Mors gryter serves home-style cooking and homemade food. Together with the meal included in the guided tour of Kurium, this offers a culinary experience distinct from the trails, local history and swimming. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you’d most like to discover Liabøen through its local stories, hikes, swimming hall or local cuisine.
