Alsvåg offers two distinctive points of reference for planning your trip: Alsvåggården, whose oldest section dates from 1671, and the wooden long church. Fv. 939 adds a specific road connection to the picture of the village’s history. In the wider destination of Øksnes, nature, hiking and cultural experiences offer further elements that you can consider as separate parts of your trip planning.

Local history and getting around Alsvåg

Alsvåggården, part of the Øksnes Museum, a department of Museum Nord, is one of the oldest preserved residential buildings in Northern Norway. Its oldest section dates from 1671. Alsvåggården was formerly a sheriff’s residence. The specific date of construction and its former function offer two different ways to explore the history of the house. Those interested in architectural and local history will find more than a date here: the building’s historical use is also part of the picture.

The church in Alsvåg is a wooden long church. This clear architectural classification adds another building type to the picture of the historic residence. Together, Alsvåggården and the church offer two different points of reference for the village’s cultural character, without requiring an extensive sightseeing itinerary.

The road connection is also specific: Fv. 939 connects Alsvåg to the west with the municipal centre of Myre and to the south with Palmåsen; both places are on Fv. 821. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider these connections alongside the destinations you would like to include in your trip planning. If your trip includes several places, this information provides a practical starting point for finding your way around the map.

The wider destination of Øksnes

In the wider destination of Øksnes, the municipality of Øksnes comprises 220 islands, islets and skerries. At the northern end of Langøya, the Anda Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Øksnes in Nordland and is a Ramsar site. Anda is home to one of the largest colonies of puffins in Nordland. To protect breeding seabirds, landing there is prohibited from 15 April to 31 July. Check current regulations before planning a landing. The Stø/Nyksund Nature Reserve was established in 2002 to protect an important seabird breeding area.

Tinden is on Tindsøya in Øksnes Vestbygd and can be reached by express boat from Myre or the Skjellfjorden express boat terminal. As schedules are subject to change, it is advisable to check them before your trip. This is a different planning option from the hiking and cultural activities available in other places in the destination.

Hiking, wildlife watching and culture

The Dronningruta is a marked circular trail between the historic fishing villages of Nyksund and Stø. It is about 15 km long and takes 5 to 8 hours. The landscape along the route includes mountains, a coastal zone, marshland, beaches and rocky terrain. There is no drinking water along the way; hikers should bring enough drinks and, if possible, a packed lunch. With its stated duration, the Dronningruta takes up a substantial block of time in your day’s itinerary. The distance, time required and food advice can help you weigh up the hike against other plans.

Another option is the Stø Whale & Arctic Wildlife Safari. It departs from Stø in Vesterålen and looks for whales, puffins, seabirds, seals and other marine animals. The safari operates during the summer season, from June to August, and is subject to weather, sea conditions and availability. Wildlife watching also depends on conditions. Check dates and availability before planning. Compared with the Dronningruta, the season and sea conditions are the most important points of reference here.

In Nyksund, you can attend concerts and meditative tours, as well as visit art galleries. Some places and events are seasonal or available on request. The seabird and seal safari also departs from and returns to Nyksund. The wider destination of Øksnes therefore offers different elements of a trip: a hike lasting several hours, a seasonal safari departing from Stø, and cultural activities in Nyksund. Their respective locations, conditions and timings can help you organise the focus of your trip.
