Grimo combines a long trading history with insights into local apple production: a family farm makes cider from its own apples, while the Heit Grimo Sauna offers a very different experience during your stay. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these varied experiences can help you decide where to stay.

Trading History and Cider in Grimo

Grimo was one of the oldest trading posts in Inner Hardanger. Historically, the place was also a natural hub on which everyone depended, and a centre of vibrant social life in Inner Hardanger. This history gives a visit its own character: Grimo’s past significance is part of what makes the place special, alongside things to do today.

Raaen Sider makes cider from its own apples at the Indre Raae family farm in Grimo, Ullensvang. Another place to visit is the Raaen Sider farm shop, located in Grimo on the FV550 right by the fjord, where cider is sold. As opening hours may change, it is best to check them before your visit.

If you would like to learn more about the business, you can plan a tour of Raaen Sider’s premises in Grimo. Ask the producer directly about current arrangements. This lets you include the farm shop and a tour as separate options in your plans without relying on set visiting times.

Planning a Visit to the Heit Grimo Sauna

The Heit Grimo Sauna is a self-service sauna that is already heated and ready to use when you arrive. Advance booking is required. It can accommodate nine people; this gives you a specific guideline when planning a sauna session together. The sauna is electrically heated and has an outdoor shower with a beautiful view. Operating details and capacity may change, so check the current conditions before your visit.

There is parking close to the sauna, including spaces for motorhomes, as well as a grocery store. If you plan to arrive by boat, you can moor at the quay by the Heit Grimo Sauna. Check practical boating conditions before your trip. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether you mainly want to experience cider and local history in Grimo, or also include other cultural and hiking interests across the wider Ullensvang destination.

Culture and Hiking in the Wider Ullensvang Area

In the wider Ullensvang destination, Agatunet offers another perspective on the region’s history. This protected cluster of farm buildings is located at Aga in Ullensvang, by the Sørfjord. Its oldest building, Lagmannsstova, dates from 1220. Agatunet offers guided tours and exhibitions on art and cultural history; check the dates in advance. At the Hardanger Folk Museum in Utne, the focus is on Hardanger embroidery, traditional costumes and folk music. The museum also includes an open-air museum with several historic buildings.

The Hjøllo-Mannsåker cultural trail also passes through the cultural landscape to the farms at Mannsåker and Hjøllo. Along the trail, 34 information boards tell the story of the area’s first settlers. This combines exercise with a specific historical theme, without conflating the trail with the attractions in Grimo.

For longer hiking days, Ullensvang offers other options with different time commitments. Dronningstien is a challenging 16-kilometre hike between Kinsarvik and Lofthus, taking six to nine hours. Along the way, there are views of the Sørfjord and the Folgefonna glacier; the route passes through lush orchards with thousands of apple trees. The Husedalen route leads from Kinsarvik into Hardangervidda National Park and takes three to six hours. These time estimates make it easier to compare the routes; Dronningstien is described as challenging.
