Samnanger combines waterside hiking destinations with distinctive landscapes and a layered cultural history. By Lake Kvernesvatnet, the Prestakvilet day-use hiking cabin is set in a woodland area with various hiking destinations; swimming is also possible there. In Eikedalen, the protected Fossen Bratte waterfall shapes the landscape. When choosing a holiday rental, these different interests may help you decide: you can explore Samnanger with a focus on hiking and nature, or turn your attention more towards history, music and local products.

Hiking around Prestakvilet

The path to Prestakvilet starts at the car park by Ådland Church, about 1.6 kilometres from the centre of Bjørkheim on FV7. From the car park, the trail is about 2.3 kilometres each way; at a leisurely pace, it takes approximately one hour. This information can help you plan the hike as a separate outing. At the destination, you’ll find a location by Lake Kvernesvatnet and a woodland area with various hiking destinations. Swimming is possible in the lake.

Group outings are also part of the hiking options: Samnanger Turlag organises group hikes and makes it easier to explore the municipality’s nature independently.

Mountains, ski areas and waterfall

The mountain areas of Samnanger are widely used for skiing. Tourist traffic is particularly high in the east, where the municipality extends to Kvamskogen. Eikedalen Skisenter is located in Samnanger at the entrance to Kvamskogen, the mountain plateau between Samnanger and Hardanger. The ski centre has Northern Europe’s tenth-longest chairlift. If you’re interested in mountain areas and ski terrain, this offers a different focus from the hiking destinations around Prestakvilet.

Fossen Bratte, a protected waterfall in the Eikedalselva with a free fall of about 80 metres, is also in Eikedalen. The river is part of the Samnangervassdraget watercourse and is permanently protected from hydropower development; the basis for this is the 1986 Watercourse Protection Plan. Tveitakvitingen reaches 1,299 metres and forms part of Samnanger’s highest areas, on the border with Fusa. The waterfall, river and high mountains each represent a different side of the landscape.

History and local culture

Ådland Church was first mentioned in written sources in 1329. Ådland was an old church site as well as a former post and horse-changing station at a transport junction between sea and land routes. The old Prestavegen also tells of earlier connections: it was built so that the priest coming from Os could easily reach Ådland Church.

Botnahytto at Botavatnet preserves another story. From 1942 to 1945, the cabin served as a hiding place for refugees and for members of the Milorg and Saborg resistance groups from Os, Samnanger and Bergen. Today, Botnahytto is a protected cultural and wartime monument in Samnanger, associated with hunting and other outdoor leisure activities. Near Bjørkheim, Notaholmen recalls how the waters were used: the old boathouse was used to store fishing equipment and is now an important cultural monument.

The Hardingfele is part of Samnanger’s musical tradition. The municipality has a rich tradition of making these instruments and has produced several respected fiddlers. The Samnangerfela is a Hardingfele made by Johannes Bårdson Tveit. If you’re interested in music and craftsmanship, you can make this tradition a focus of your trip alongside nature and history.

Places and regional orientation

Tysse is the administrative centre of Samnanger and has shops and a service centre. County Road 49 runs from Kvamskogen through Eikedalen, past Tysse and Haga, over Gullbotn and through Samnanger to the E16 at the border with Bergen. Samnanger and Tysse are also among the place pages you can refer to when finding your way around Samnanger.

When looking for a holiday rental in Samnanger, you can first consider which aspect of your stay interests you most: hiking trails and Lake Kvernesvatnet, the mountain areas and Eikedalen, or the municipality’s history and culture. These different themes can help you choose the focus that best suits your trip.
