Radøy: Heathland, Hills and Water
Accommodation in Radøy
Radøy combines a human-shaped heathland landscape with narrow sounds, lakes and scenic heights. In the north, long valleys and parallel sounds run northwest towards the sea. Narrow lakes or small, slow-flowing streams lie in the hollows. If you like to fill your holiday with hikes, water and cultural discoveries, you’ll find a variety of ways to plan your days here.
Heathland, Hills and Water on Radøy
A few thousand years ago, the forest on Radøy was transformed into an open landscape through controlled burning and clearing. Heathland and grassy meadows give it this human-made character; ling heather subsequently spread across the area. The landscape also tells the story of how nature has been changed over time by human use. From Nøttveitveten, you can see a clear transition: the low-lying coastal plain lies to the northwest, with hills further east.
Water is also part of the island’s natural landscape: its coastal waters include lakes rich in fish, and sea trout migrate upriver in some of its rivers. This makes Radøy interesting for travellers who want to include waterways in their plans as well as walking excursions. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore be important to consider whether you want to focus your stay on hiking, water activities or a mix of both.
Hiking Destinations with a View
The marked trail to Kvistefjellet starts at Kvistevegen and leads to the summit. At 209 m, it is the second-highest mountain on Radøy. From the top, the view extends across much of Radøy and neighbouring municipalities, including towards Masfjordfjella, Gulen, Fedjeosen, Øygarden, Sotra, Byfjella and Gullfjellet. The elevation and marked trail provide a clear point of reference for planning your day, without specifying a particular walking time.
Another hike leads through the former Millennium site of Radøy to Nøttveitveten at 205 m and Morkefjellet at 217 m. Morkefjellet is the highest mountain in the municipality. There is a cairn at the summit of Nøttveitveten, with a shelter just below where you can sit down. If you like to plan a rest stop into your hike, you can factor in this spot when choosing your route. The two named heights also offer different viewpoints over Radøy, and should not be understood as the same destination.
Water Activities and the Sjøbua Day-Trip Cabin
At Byngja, you can swim in fresh and seawater, fish in the sea and go kayaking. There is a large car park for 23 cars, as well as toilets, tables and benches. A footpath about 1.2 m wide also leads from the car park. This information helps you understand the different activities available at Byngja; however, it does not mean that all activities start from the same place.
The Sjøbua day-trip cabin at Byngja can be reached by kayak, boat or on foot. From the car park, a footpath just under 1 km long first follows a gravel road to the bathing area, then continues along an accessible wooden boardwalk to the cabin. Sjøbua is intended for daytime visits: overnight stays are not permitted. Inside, there is a small wood-burning stove, a library with children’s books in Nynorsk, and benches; there are more benches outside. The cabin can be considered a destination in its own right, alongside swimming, paddling or going for a walk.
Culture and Local Pages
Vestnorsk utvandringssenter is an open-air museum with buildings constructed by Norwegian Americans in the USA and subsequently relocated to Norway. The buildings bring the story of Norwegian emigration together with an outdoor visit. At Vågenes, you can also see stone walls made from rounded stones. These stones were cleared from the large moraine that runs across Radøy. The museum and the walls offer two different ways to explore local history: through relocated buildings and traces of how the landscape was shaped.
For further information about local areas, you can also visit the pages for Bøvågen, Sæbøvågen and Manger. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Radøy, the landscape and your preferred activities can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
