Discover Vikanes
Accommodation in Vikanes
Vikanes offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: fjord history around Vike Church and mountain scenery near Dyrkolbotn. The church stands on a small headland west of the former Vikanes ferry landing. In Dyrkolbotn, the setting in Romarheimsdalen, mountain trails and seasonal grazing shape the surrounding landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice on the experiences that matter to you during your stay—whether that is culture by the fjord or activities in the mountains.
Fjord church and historic routes
Near Vikanes, Vike Church stands just west of the former Vikanes ferry landing on the north shore of the Osterfjord, at the entrance to the Romarheimsfjord. It is a single-nave, rectangular long church. “Single-nave” refers to a church interior with one nave; “long church” describes its elongated form. This makes its architecture easy to understand even without prior knowledge of art history. Its good acoustics and beautiful fjordside setting make the church a suitable venue for concerts.
Transport routes also have a historical connection: a map from 1864 shows a route from Romarheimsdalen to Mo that passed through Dyrkolbotn. The map entry gives the connection a specific historical date and reveals a different side of the area from its present-day recreational opportunities. For travellers interested in culture and history, the church’s architecture and the former route stand out as two distinct themes.
Dyrkolbotn: mountains and summer pasture
Dyrkolbotn lies at an elevation of 350 metres in Romarheimsdalen, in the western part of Stølsheimen. The mountain areas to the north and east have hiking trails and ski facilities, and are used year-round. School stays are also available in the area, which has a facility for such stays, including use as a school camp. The hiking opportunities, ski facilities and school stays give the mountain area a variety of uses, without implying a single, set daily routine.
One particularly tangible seasonal feature is Dyrkolbotn’s summer pasture. From July into September, 70 goats from the Hole gard farm graze freely on the mountain pastures. Visitors can try milking the goats. This connects a stay in the mountains with an insight into pastoral farming. At the same time, this seasonal activity differs from the year-round use of the mountain areas: if you would like to include the goat pasture in your plans, the period from July into September is the relevant time to bear in mind.
Getting there and choosing the focus of your holiday
One route option for visiting the summer pasture involves a short drive to Tyssebotn, followed by a trip on a local scheduled boat to Vikanes or Romarheim. Check the scheduled boat timetable for your travel date before planning the excursion. Dyrkolbotn kryss is the nearest bus stop for Dyrkolbotn. From there, it is about a 15-minute walk, or roughly 1 kilometre, to the mountain lodge. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable separately.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Vikanes, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on. Would you like to explore the fjord setting and Vike Church, or are you especially interested in hiking trails, ski facilities and seasonal life at the summer pasture? These differences give you specific themes to weigh up when planning your trip.
