Holmedal combines a traditional Western Norwegian cultural landscape with a protected deciduous forest nature reserve. Broad river terraces, old farmsteads and nearby trails give the area several distinct sides: you can explore nature, rural history or enjoy an active stay in the mountains. Which of these experiences you want to shape your holiday can also help guide your choice of destination and holiday rental.

River Terraces, Farmsteads and Forest

Holmedal and neighbouring Tveit lie on broad river terraces where Tveitedalen opens towards the fjord. The Tveitelva divides the area: Holmedal lies east of the river and Tveit to the west. Holmedal’s traditional agricultural landscape is part of a fjord cultural landscape. The Holmedal and Tveit area is considered a thriving cultural landscape with a particularly strong sense of cohesion; modern and traditional agricultural settings exist side by side here.

Above Holmedal, old stone walls, grazing slopes and pollarded trees form a well-preserved cultural landscape. The farmsteads also shape the area: Holmedal has traditional, well-preserved Western Norwegian farms with a long history of continuity, as well as several preserved farmsteads and groups of buildings. Those interested in rural architecture and the history of everyday life will find a different focus here than in the forest area of Holmedalsberget.

Holmedalsberget is a protected deciduous forest nature reserve near Holmedal in Kvinnherad and also a large forest area by the Matresfjord. It is home to one of the largest deciduous forests in Hordaland. More than 200 species of vascular plants grow there, including several rare species. Tree species typical of Western Norwegian deciduous forests include elm, ash, lime, hazel, black alder, grey alder and oak. There are no roads or other recent intrusions in the area. These distinctive forest features also make Holmedal interesting to travellers who want to experience nature not just as a backdrop, but in all its variety.

Church History and Views Across the Fjord

The history of Holmedal Church goes back further than the present building. The first known stave church in Holmedal is mentioned in a land register from the 14th century. Materials from the earlier church that could be reused were later incorporated into the construction of the present Holmedal Church. The wooden building was consecrated on 22 November 1882 and has 215 seats. The old church site at Holmedal on Utåker is considered particularly valuable historically.

Another place with a character of its own is the old cemetery at Holmedal. It is in Kyrkjedalen in Holmedal on Utåker and offers panoramic views over the Skånevik Fjord. Travellers who enjoy exploring local history can discover different aspects of Holmedal’s past through the cemetery and the church’s history.

Circular Walks and Mountain Hikes Nearby

In nearby Tveitedalen, a circular route starts and ends at Ternebu in the Tveitedalen Ski Centre. It follows the floodlit trail around Bakkastølsvatnet. In winter, the floodlit trail is groomed for cross-country skiing. This gives you two different options for planning your day: a walk around the lake or cross-country skiing in winter.

The hike to Ulvanosa and Høgetinden is also signposted from Ternebu. After the forest road or floodlit trail, the path is marked with a red T. One nearby route to Ulvanosa offers either a direct ascent to the summit or a marked route around Øktaredalsnuten. From this route, the views extend across the mountains of Etne and Kvinnherad, Folgefonna, the Hardangerfjord and the mountain areas towards Bergen. The options differ in whether you climb directly to the summit or follow the marked route around Øktaredalsnuten.

Another hiking trail from Utåker to Ulvanosa follows the floodlit path from the car park by Bakkastølsvatnet, then continues along the river to the inner bridge. Another hike from Utåker starts at the end of the tractor road, follows the mountain ridge to the summer pasture hut at Dyrrindo and then follows the T-marked trail. Dyrrindo, near Utåker and Holmedal, is a restored summer pasture area that is still in active use. To drive to the starting point of the Ulvanosa hike, take the turn-off from the main road towards Holmedal, then drive down towards the Utåker ferry quay.

Those interested in climbing will find a climbing area nearby on the steep mountain slopes towards Uskedalen, with routes of all difficulty levels. In spring, the nearby Ulvanosa route also offers the opportunity to ski from Tveitedalen down to Ulvanosa. These different activities can help you choose the focus of your holiday: Holmedal appeals to travellers who want to include trails, mountain views or outdoor activities alongside the cultural landscape.
