In Bomlo, coastal experiences meet history that can be explored at specific places. The Kulleseid Canal tells the story of a practical need in shipping, while bathing coves, a short mountain hike and historic school and residential buildings make for very different holiday days. You can choose your holiday rental based on which of these aspects of the destination interests you most.

The Kulleseid Canal: waterway and landmark

The Kulleseid Canal, one of the municipality’s best-known landmarks, lies near Finnås in the middle of Bømlo. It was completed in 1856 to make it easier for boats to travel between the eastern and western sides of Bømlo. Today, you can travel through the canal by boat or kayak. There is also a guest harbour with facilities and a restaurant by the water; as the facilities and restaurant operations may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before visiting.

If you prefer to be active on land, you’ll find an official 18-hole disc golf course at the Kulleseid Canal. It covers about 90 decares and is open to everyone. The canal thus brings together several options for a day out: a trip on the water, time at the guest harbour or a round on the course. You can choose the combination that best suits your plans from these specific activities.

Coastal coves and views

For a swim or a fishing break, Narravik offers a different setting: this small bathing cove is west of Mosterhamn. You can swim from the beach or the rocks, and fishing with a rod is also an option. Vedvika is in Vorlandsvågen, just north of Langevåg on the southeastern side of Bømlo. It has a bathing area, a swimming jetty, a toilet, a shelter and good parking. There are hiking opportunities nearby. As outdoor facilities can change, it’s worth checking the latest information before your visit.

A short hike up the mountain to Siggjo offers a different perspective: from there, the 360-degree view stretches across all of Sunnhordland. A coastal swim, a round at the canal and a far-reaching view are distinct experiences to choose from. When selecting your accommodation, it may help to first consider which outings matter most for your trip rather than assuming that every holiday day will have the same focus.

School history and historic buildings

The Bømlo School Museum preserves the Katla School at Skinnhueneset. The school building was constructed in 1900 and used until 1973. Apart from necessary maintenance, it has remained unchanged. The site gives a tangible impression of how long a school building could remain in use and how its historic appearance has been preserved.

Another building with its own story is Hilleborgstova: this small, red-painted house in Kåså was built by Kristoffer Sørensen around 1827–1830. Kulleseid Telegraph Station also offers a glimpse into the past. It houses a small exhibition about the history of the telegraph station. Visits must be arranged in advance, as there are no regular opening hours. Plan this stop differently from a spontaneous detour.

Cycling trip and further visitor planning

Bømlo is part of the European North Sea Cycle Route, EuroVelo. When arriving from the south, the Bømlo section uses the ferry from Buavåg to Langevåg. Check the timetable separately for your intended travel date before planning your cycling stages. Brandasund Kultur og Fritid can be contacted about boat transport to Slåtterøy Lighthouse; availability should be checked again before your trip. These notes address specific planning questions without assuming that a particular service or timetable is currently available.

Bømlo in a broader context

Across the wider destination of Bømlo, the landscape ranges from wind-shaped coastal cliffs to lush, deep forests. Bømlo is a coastal archipelago of more than 1,000 islands; the region extends from Langevåg and the car-free island of Espevær in the south to Slåtterøy in the north. This broader view complements the individual places and experiences: you can shape your trip around coastal time, culture, cycling or the landscape, then decide which location best suits your holiday rental and planned outings.
